About the role
We are seeking an experienced and strategic Head of Tax to lead and oversee all tax-related matters for a dynamic trading firm. This role will be responsible for designing and executing the firm’s tax strategy, with particular emphasis on UP-C structures, complex partnership taxation, and multi-entity environments.
Responsibilities
Develop and lead the firm’s overall tax strategy, ensuring alignment with business objectives and regulatory requirements
Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership on tax implications of business decisions, including trading strategies, new products, and corporate transactions
Optimize tax efficiency across the firm’s legal entity structure
Lead all tax planning, structuring, and compliance related to Umbrella Partnership-Corporation (UP-C) structures
Oversee partnership allocations, basis tracking, and investor reporting
Manage tax aspects of IPO readiness, step-ups, exchanges, and related transactions
Provide technical guidance on complex partnership issues, including carried interest, capital accounts, and waterfall structures
Oversee all federal, state, and local tax compliance processes, including partnership returns (Forms 1065), corporate filings, and investor reporting (Schedule K-1s)
Ensure timely and accurate tax provisioning in accordance with ASC 740
Manage relationships with external auditors, advisors, and tax authorities
Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing tax team
Establish clear processes, controls, and best practices across tax operations
Foster a collaborative environment focused on professional development and continuous improvement
Identify and mitigate tax risks across the organization
Ensure strong internal controls and documentation around tax positions
Stay current with evolving tax legislation and assess impact on the business
Partner closely with Finance, Legal, Operations, and Trading teams
Support M&A activity, structuring, and due diligence from a tax perspective
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA strongly preferred; MST or JD/LL.M. in Tax is a plus)
12+ years of progressive tax experience, including leadership responsibilities
Deep expertise in partnership taxation and UP-C structures
Experience within a trading firm, hedge fund, private equity firm, or financial services environment
Proven track record of managing and developing teams
Strong knowledge of U.S. federal, state, and partnership tax compliance
Experience with IPO transactions or publicly traded partnership structures (preferred)
Familiarity with trading strategies and financial instruments (equities, derivatives, etc.)
Experience operating in a high-growth or entrepreneurial environment (preferred)
Strategic thinker with strong problem-solving capabilities
Ability to translate complex tax concepts into business insights
Highly organized with strong attention to detail
Exceptional leadership and communication skills
Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
