Head Golf Coach (Men)
About the Role
To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize individual and team success. The coach must demonstrate behaviors that foster socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in student athletes. The role also involves upgrading knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation.
The success of athletic programs influences the community's image of the entire school system. Public exposure carries significant responsibility, and while community and parental pressure for winning performance exists, it must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and mental health. The position includes extended hours, risk of injury, and due process considerations.
Reports To
The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the principal.
Supervises
The head coach advises, coordinates, and supports a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in collaboration with the athletic director and respective principals.
Responsibilities
- Implement and ensure compliance with all athletic policies approved by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools' Board of Education.
- Understand and consistently apply system, state, and league regulations, interpreting them for staff.
- Follow the proper administrative line of command for requests or grievances.
- Attend all required public, staff, and departmental meetings.
Staff Responsibilities
- Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff.
- Design and conduct conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure program awareness.
- Encourage professional growth by promoting clinic attendance per local policy.
- Delegate duties, supervise implementation, and evaluate assistant coaches at season’s end.
- Maintain discipline, address grievances, and foster morale and cooperation.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the athletic director or principal.
Administrative Duties
- Assist the athletic director in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special events.
- Prepare for scheduled sport events or practices and adhere to facility times.
- Coordinate with maintenance and school employees.
- Provide documentation for state and system requirements, including physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
- Ensure proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment and sites.
- Advise the athletic director and recommend policy, procedural, or method changes.
Student Responsibilities
- Serve as a mentor to promote character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
- Monitor student athletes' grades and conduct.
- Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards during practices, games, and travel.
- Communicate training rules and sport-specific regulations to participants.
- Implement programs and policies for injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
- Complete and submit paperwork for disabling athletic injuries within 24 hours.
- Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
- Enforce discipline, delineate due process procedures, and contact parents when necessary.
- Assist athletes with college or advanced educational selection.
Finance & Equipment
- Participate in budgeting by establishing requirements for the next season.
- Recommend equipment guidelines, including type, style, color, or technical specifications.
- Operate within budget appropriations and account for all equipment.
- Collect costs for lost or unreturned equipment.
- Arrange for issuing, storing, and reconditioning equipment, and submit annual inventory records.
- Properly mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing.
- Monitor equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorizing access and requisitions.
- Ensure athletes are only in authorized areas at appropriate times.
- Inspect locker rooms before and after practices and games for cleanliness.
- Maintain cleanliness and upkeep of specific sport equipment.
- Secure doors, lights, windows, and locks if custodians are not on duty.
- Instill respect for equipment and school property in athletes.
Public Relations
- Organize preseason meetings for parents, coaches, players, and guests.
- Promote the sport within the school by recruiting athletes not in other programs and externally through media, little league programs, or other feasible methods.
- Maintain quality, effectiveness, and validity of oral or written releases to local media.
- Foster good public relations with media, booster clubs, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
- Provide information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results.
Qualifications
- Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
- Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport (major sports).
- Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and a commitment to examining new theories and procedures.
- Serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instructions and actions.
