About the Role
The role of the Head Custodian-High School is to lead and manage the operations of the District’s custodial staff and crossing guards (approx. 70 people). This position ensures efficient operations meeting the needs of students, staff, and the public. It requires good human relation skills, flexibility, and effective oral and written communication skills. The Head Custodian-High School uses independent judgment to address a variety of issues and is considered essential, expected to respond to calls at all hours.
Responsibilities
- Assists with interviews, new hires, counseling, and terminations of custodial staff under supervision.
- Coordinates, assigns, and inspects custodial work at all school buildings.
- Manages substitutes for custodial coverage.
- Develops and implements custodial cleaning procedures and assesses efficiency.
- Provides safety training to staff.
- Develops and implements a custodial calendar for extracurricular events in coordination with the athletic department.
- Provides cleaning “best practices” training to staff.
- Oversees compliance with District required training.
- Responds to emergency alarm calls, vandalism, snow and ice events, and other incidents.
- Supervises procurement of cleaning supplies and equipment within budget.
- Maintains and distributes Safety Data Sheets for cleaning supplies.
- Assists with custodial supply bid process and vendor selection.
- Develops and oversees gym floor refinishing schedules.
- Coordinates snow removal and ice treatment for facility sidewalks and public walks.
- Completes inspections of facility cleanliness and physical operations.
- Supervises custodial staff in supply purchases and ensures receipt submission.
- Completes annual performance evaluations of custodial staff.
- Manages solid waste and recycling services, adjusting for seasonal needs.
- Maintains confidentiality of records and information.
- Oversees special projects and set-ups as assigned.
- Ensures accurate and prompt submission of timesheets.
- Maintains inventory records of custodial equipment and supplies.
- Resolves conflicts professionally and timely.
- Suggests and implements changes for better quality and efficiency.
- Submits safety or operational concerns to the Director of Facilities.
- Assists with energy conservation measures.
- Provides quarterly detailed written inspections to the Director of Facilities and building Principal.
- Works closely with building Principals and Custodial Supervisor on staffing matters.
- Reports facility issues daily to the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School diploma.
- Minimum of five years of successful custodial experience.
- Progressive supervisory experience preferred.
- Ability to work independently.
- Experience operating a variety of custodial equipment.
Skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Clear communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to read and interpret documents.
- Familiarity with District programs: GMAIL, Google Docs and Sheets, Talent ED, KRONOS, etc.
- Consistent and regular attendance.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Missouri Class E Driver’s License with a good driving record.
- Completion of the Certified Facility Manager program (preferred but not required).
- CPR/First Aid Certificate desirable.
- Satisfactory background check and work history.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk continuously, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Frequent walking on slippery surfaces and working in varying temperatures.
- Ability to hear, speak, and have close to moderate distance vision.
- Exposure to moving mechanical equipment and occasional toxic/caustic chemicals.
- Moderate to occasionally loud noise levels.
- Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
Salary: Commensurate with experience and education.
