Non-exempt position reporting to the Principal.

About the Role

To maintain the safety, cleanliness, and upkeep of the physical school plant and grounds to provide an environment conducive to learning.

Responsibilities

  • Helps in the selection, assignment, scheduling, and training of members of the custodial staff at the assigned school.
  • Plans and oversees all maintenance and repair work, maintaining a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency.
  • Monitors the time records and schedules of all custodial employees in the school and certifies them for salary payments.
  • Maintains an inventory and recommends purchase of suitable supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Evaluates the performance of the custodial staff on a regular basis.
  • Strives constantly to promote the safety, health, and comfort of the students and employees.
  • Keeps all boiler rooms and electrical rooms clear of rubbish and stored materials.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Demonstrates all duties necessary as a custodian.
  • Uses district checklist to maintain playground equipment in safe working condition.
  • Works with others consistently in a cooperative and respectful manner.
  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities designated by the principal.

Requirements

  • 3 years experience as a school custodian or the equivalent in custodial service in other institutions and firms.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Physical Requirements

  • Requires medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, stretching or lifting all of the time.
  • Involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis.
  • Requires considerable skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
  • Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using office and specialized equipment; to operate motor vehicles.
  • Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, hand and power tools, measuring devices, etc.
  • Must have significant levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.
  • Requires the ability to talk and hear (expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words and perceiving nature of sounds by ear).

  • Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information, including giving assignments and instructions to subordinates and receiving information from supervisors.
  • Language Ability: Ability to read a variety of administrative, technical, and other documents and reports; ability to prepare various types of reports and documents with proper format; ability to speak before others with poise, voice control, and confidence.
  • Intelligence: Ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with concrete variables in situations with limited standardization; ability to interpret instructions in oral, written, diagrammatic, or schedule form; ability to apply influence systems in staff supervision; ability to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; ability to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, follow and give verbal and written instructions; counsel and teach employees; communicate effectively in technical and professional languages including facility management, building trades, and custodial care.
  • Numeric Aptitude: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide; determine percentages and decimals; determine time; use practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio, and proportion.
  • Form/Spatial Aptitude: Ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.
  • Interpersonal Temperament: Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions; adaptability to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines; may be subject to tension, danger, or risk as a regular part of the job.

Schedule

240 days per year.
