About the role

The Head Age Group Swim Coach promotes and ensures a positive swim team experience for all Darien YMCA Piranha team members. You will coach the program’s 6–12-year-old age group in competitive swim techniques, develop and improve their skills, and create a safe, enthusiastic environment where the team can thrive. The role involves leading practices, encouraging participation in competitive meets, and fostering trust and commitment from athletes, parents, and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Lead coach for developmental pre-team.
  • Conduct group practices and teach competitive swimming techniques to athletes of a wide range of ages and abilities.
  • Use professional knowledge and judgement to plan and implement appropriate daily workouts.
  • Supervise and delegate responsibilities to assistant coaches to ensure proper techniques are being taught and athletes are learning and improving.
  • Develop season plans for different age and ability groups aligned with the overall team and head coach philosophy.
  • Assist with team tryouts, individual evaluations, Masters Swim Program, and other team-related programs.
  • Participate in and assist with the coordination of Swim Club events and functions.
  • Ensure daily and season-long training is age and ability appropriate; modify training for athletes in case of injury or over-training.
  • Manage meet entries for developmental group swimmers and coordinate appropriate coach coverage for those meets.
  • Attend and coach weekend swim meets as necessary and directed.
  • Participate in team social events.
  • Communicate with athletes, parents, and coaches via email, newsletter, and social media regarding practices, meets, or other team events.
  • Monitor and log daily attendance.
  • Maintain records of assistant/part-time coach’s certifications and USA Swimming memberships.

Requirements

  • 3 years of swim coaching experience with at least 1 year as lead coach.
  • Current CPR, Lifeguarding, and/or Coaches Safety Training certifications (or ability to obtain prior to employment).
  • Member in good standing with USA Swimming.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
