Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Install, lay out, align, and assemble HDPE (polyethylene) pipe ranging from 8” to 22” diameter in accordance with project specifications and manufacturer requirements.
- Perform butt fusion and/or electrofusion welding of HDPE pipe using approved fusion equipment and procedures.
- Safely operate and maintain HDPE pipe fusion machines, generators, facing tools, heaters, and related equipment.
- Read and interpret project drawings, fusion logs, and manufacturer fusion parameters to ensure proper installation and weld integrity.
- Congduct fusion welds that meet or exceed quality standards, including visual inspection and documentation requirements.
- Assist with trenching, bedding, pipe placement, tie-ins, and backfill operations as required.
- Follow all company safety policies, including taking specific action to avoid other workers, equipment, and potential obstructions.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and properly store tools and materials.
- Perform routine inspection and basic maintenance of fusion equipment and tools.
- Work collaboratively with crew members, foremen, inspectors, and other trades to meet production schedules.
- Be willing and able to perform general manual labor when not actively fitting or welding pipe.
- Conduct all work with 100% integrity, professionalism, and commitment to quality.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience installing and welding HDPE pipe in heavy civil, utility, or infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated experience fusing HDPE pipe in the 8”–22” size range.
- Must be certified in HDPE pipe fusion (butt fusion and/or electrofusion) by a recognized manufacturer or training provider (e.g., McElroy or equivalent).
- Able to read and follow written and oral instructions, including fusion procedures and safety guidelines.
Physical Requirements
- Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
- Work long shifts with non-standard break times.
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Must have good hand-eye coordination, quick reaction times.
- Able to work in confined or enclosed spaces.
- Able to sit for long periods of time.
- Able to wear a hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, and safety-toed boots.
- Able to walk moderate distances to reach work area (1/2 mile or more)
- Able to Enter the cab of a vehicle that is 3.5 feet (or more) off the ground.
- Able to sit in the operator’s seat of equipment and safely reach all pedals, switches, levers, buttons, etc. required to safely operate the equipment (if authorized for that piece of equipment)
- Able to sit in the operator’s seat of equipment and have an adequate field of vision of all instruments, gauges, warning lights, as well as an acceptable field of vision out of the windows and/or mirrors (if authorized for that piece of equipment)
- Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
