About the role
This position exists to assist with the operation and maintenance at the New London State Fish Hatchery (NLSFH), including fish propagation assignments and stocking within the Spicer Fish Management Area, oftentimes working independently.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the walleye, muskellunge, and other assigned fish species hatchery operations at the Spicer Fish Management Area.
- Work outdoors in adverse weather and environmental conditions on a frequent basis.
- Inform and educate the public about hatcheries.
- Manage and maintain hatchery facilities and equipment.
- Perform fish propagation tasks such as spawn taking, hauling, and stocking.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Collaborate with other departments and stakeholders.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in aquaculture, fisheries management, aquatic biology or closely related area.
- Experience in basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, metal working applications, and power tool operation.
- Valid Class A license with a tanker and air brake endorsement.
- Knowledge of fish health management, wastewater management, and fish nutrition.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in fisheries management or related field.
- Experience with data management, statistical analysis, and report preparation.
- Basic knowledge of heavy equipment (mid-size tractors) and I-ITV operation.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, evenings, and nights.
Skills
- Strong computer skills, including knowledge of databases, spreadsheets, and word processing.
- Excellent project management and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Pay
$25.22 - $36.59 / hourly; $52,659 - $76,400 / annually
