About the role

The Grand Marais Fisheries Specialist position plays a crucial role in implementing, evaluating, and reporting on fisheries management activities. This includes protecting, enhancing, or maintaining aquatic habitats and fisheries resources in the Grand Marais management area.

Responsibilities

• Aid in planning, implementing, and reporting lake and stream investigations to gather scientific data for management purposes.
• Assist with angler creel and recreational use surveys, compiling and analyzing results, and presenting findings to inform management decisions.
• Support fish propagation and distribution programs to achieve individual lake stocking objectives and maintain healthy sport fisheries.
• Maintain and improve fish and aquatic habitat in public waters.
• Engage in special fish management projects to enhance angling opportunities.
• Maintain and promote public relations to inform various clienteles about fisheries management programs and educate them on aquatic resources issues.
• Operate and maintain equipment, ensure proper recordkeeping, and perform project and personal administrative duties.
• Ensure safe performance of all tasks by adhering to established safety procedures and training.

Requirements

Minimum qualifications include a bachelor's degree in biology, fisheries, fish, or wildlife, or a closely related field, with a minimum of 4 courses in fisheries science totaling 12 semester or 18 quarter hours. Additionally, applicants must have a thorough knowledge of fish sampling equipment, techniques, and principles of fisheries management and ecology; writing skills sufficient to draft professional lake management plans, technical reports, letters, correspondence, etc.; communication skills sufficient to inform diverse stakeholders; computer literacy, including knowledge of database spreadsheets and word processing; and the ability to maintain and safely operate equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

• One year of directed field fisheries experience.
• Experience conducting angler creel surveys or mark-recapture experiments.
• Experience conducting stream surveys, documenting habitat attributes, and identifying habitat enhancement opportunities.
• Experience working in remote locations, wilderness settings, and/or backcountry camping.
• Knowledge and experience in remote sensing applications, GPS equipment, and GIS applications.
• Experience in developing and managing large databases, statistical analyses, data compilation and summarization, and report development.
• Lead work experience.
