Hatchery Specialist - NR Specialist Fisheries

About the role

This position exists to assist with the operation and maintenance at the New London State Fish Hatchery (NLSFH), including fish propagation assignments and stocking within the Spicer Fish Management Area, oftentimes working independently.

Responsibilities

• Assist with the walleye, muskellunge, and other assigned fish species hatchery operations at the Spicer Fish Management Area.
• Work outdoors in adverse weather and environmental conditions on a frequent basis.
• Inform and educate the public about hatcheries.
• Work independently and schedule hours based on staffing needs, which may include day, weekend, evening, or night shifts.
• Manage and maintain a positive working environment and timely completion of work/projects.
• Manage and maintain fish health, wastewater management, and fish nutrition.
• Communicate effectively with other staff and the public.
• Manage data and prepare reports.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in aquaculture, fisheries management, aquatic biology or closely related area.
• Experience in basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, metal working applications, and power tool operation.
• Valid Class A license with a tanker and air brake endorsement.
• Completion of USFWS short courses or equivalent in fish health and coolwater/warmwater fish culture.
• Knowledge of raising and stocking coolwater/warmwater fish species in intensive management systems.
• Basic knowledge of heavy equipment (mid-size tractors) and I-ITV operation.

Qualifications

• Minimum qualifications include a bachelor's degree and experience in basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, metal working applications, and power tool operation.
• Preferred qualifications include professional level coolwater/warmwater hatchery facilities experience, technical experience in coolwater/warmwater fish propagation, and completion of USFWS short courses or equivalent in fish health and coolwater/warmwater fish culture.

Skills

• Communication skills sufficient to inform the public of fish culture programs and to communicate effectively with other staff.
• Computer skills including knowledge of databases, spreadsheets and word processing sufficient to create and write reports and access data.

Pay

$25.22 - $36.59 / hourly; $52,659 - $76,400 / annually

Day Shift

Monday - Friday

Must reside within 15-minute drive of the hatchery to accommodate emergency response and on-call duties.
