Hardware Test Engineer
Position Summary
The Hardware Electrical Test Engineer is responsible for executing verification and validation testing for DC fast charging components and charging systems. This role supports hardware and software testing to verify the designs that meet performance, reliability, and compliance requirements.
Responsibilities
- Execute verification and validation testing at PCBA, component, subsystem, and system levels.
- Implement test cases derived from system validation plans in collaboration with Validation Engineers.
- Setup test stages to include hardware under test, instrumentation, and data acquisition.
- Configure and operate test equipment including power supplies, electronic loads, oscilloscopes, and environmental chambers.
- Design test fixtures and support bring up of automated and manual test setups.
- Develop and maintain automated test scripts and data collection tools.
- Execute environmental, durability, electrical, and functional test campaigns.
- Analyze test results and participate in post-test reviews to communicate findings and recommendations.
- Generate work instructions for technicians to execute
- Instrument systems to capture electrical, thermal, and mechanical measurements.
- Maintain test assets including hardware configuration, equipment calibration, software versions, and test documentation.
- Support root cause investigations and failure analysis during test campaigns.
- Collaborate with design, reliability, manufacturing, and supplier teams to resolve issues under guidance of senior engineers.
- Collaborate with technicians supporting test execution.
- Support deployment and maintenance of electrical integration test benches for evaluation of motors, pumps, cables, and connector systems.
- Support PCBA board bring up and rework when issues are detected.
- Support instrumentation of PCBA for analysis and testing.
Qualifications
- Typically requires a minimum of 2 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 1 year and a Master’s degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent work experience.
Desired Skills
- Hands-on experience working within a laboratory environment.
- Experience setting up for test, execution of hardware of test, and error-proofing test setups.
- Experience executing structured test protocols.
- Proficiency with lab instrumentation including power supplies, electronic loads, oscilloscopes, function generators, and DAQ systems.
- Programming experience in Python, SQL, or similar tools for automation, data analysis, and visualization.
- Experience designing test fixtures and selecting appropriate test equipment.
- Strong documentation and reporting skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Willingness to travel for test integration, commissioning, or supplier support.
- Experience soldering and instrumenting PCBA components.
- Experience working with medium- or high-voltage systems (up to 1000 VDC).
- Experience developing structured test protocols.
- Experience with CAN-based networks (CAN, CAN FD) and Ethernet.
- Experience with SCPI or similar interfaces in automation for test control.
- Familiarity with engineering workflow tools such as JIRA, Confluence, or Jama.
- Experience with embedded Linux systems including flashing, configuration, and interface debugging.
