HARBOR SAFETY OFFICER - FT/PT
About the role
The City of Newport Beach Harbor Department seeks a Harbor Safety Officer to patrol the Newport Harbor, assist boaters, and enforce harbor codes and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Patrol the Newport Harbor to promote boater compliance with harbor codes, regulations, and ordinances.
- Assist the boating public by providing general information on harbor programs and services.
- Aid boaters in securing moorings, collecting fees, and answering general questions.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Requirements
Due to the performance of some field duties, which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver’s license and an acceptable driving record are required. A California Boater Card or equivalent is also required.
Qualifications
A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
- One year of heavy customer service experience working in a harbor or marine environment, including experience operating a marine vessel.
- Experience in compliance and/or enforcement is highly desirable.
Skills
Essential skills include proficiency in marine operations, customer service, and the ability to enforce harbor codes and regulations.

Schedule
The full-time position may work a 9/80 or 4/10 schedule, including weekends. The part-time position will work up to 30 hours per week, including weekends.
