About the role
This position will remain open until filled. Work schedule is Monday - Friday, 4pm - 7pm and Saturday, 8am - 1pm Under general supervision, teaches gymnastics classes.
Responsibilities
- Assists with set-up, tear-down, preparation, and planning of gymnastics classes.
- Assists level II Instructors in teaching tot through beginner gymnastics classes through games, movement, dance and songs.
- Performs light spotting of children working on basic gymnastics skills on the floor, bars and beam in a circuit environment.
- Ensures all possible safety measures are observed.
- Communicates and enforces facility and class policies and procedures.
- Responds to emergency situations as required and maintains accurate accident and incident reports.
- Provides excellent customer service, including interacting with participants and/or parents to answer questions and resolve problems.
- Reports any issues and concerns to supervisor.
- Complies with city and departmental rules and regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Substitutes for Instructors at the same level as needed.
- Organizes and supervises children’s parties at one of the city’s recreational facilities.
- Sets up and decorates prior to parties; and cleans up after parties.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Gymnastics Instructor I: Must be at least 15 years of age. Previous experience as a competitive gymnast or gymnastics teaching experience in a recreation setting or a private club is preferred. In Addition To Previous Requirements: Two years of gymnastics teaching experience in a recreation setting or a private club or one year of experience as a City of Thornton Gymnastics Instructor I.
- Gymnastics Instructor II: Must attend a city of Thornton “Intermediate Spotting” and “Intermediate Skills” class within 60 days of hire. Prior to teaching higher levels, must attend a city of Thornton “Advanced Spotting” and “Advanced Skills” class within 60 days of hire.
Skills
- Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the city of Thornton and the department.
- Knowledge of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer and first aid.
- Ability to be trained in the basics of gymnastics instruction.
- Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
- Ability to effectively lead and coordinate gymnastic classes.
- Ability to demonstrate gymnastic skills.
- Ability to provide the necessary spotting at each level.
- Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures.
- Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations.
- Ability to listen well and communicate effectively with the public.
- Ability to promote and provide quality gymnastic classes.
- Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations.
- Ability to teach a non-competitive gymnastics class in a structured format for the proper progression of child development in gymnastics.
- Ability to lead a non-competitive gymnastics class in stretching, games, songs, and gymnastics activities that are age appropriate.
- Ability to substitute for other Instructors.

Pay
Level and starting salary will depend upon the successful candidate’s education, knowledge, experience, and certifications.
