Guidance Navigation Control Engineer (Level 3 or 4)

About the role
Northrop Grumman Weapons Systems Division has a remarkable opportunity for an experienced GNC Engineer to support our Armament Systems site in Plymouth, MN. This site develops and produces medium- and large-caliber ammunition as well as precision capabilities for direct and indirect fire systems. The team leads the industry in lifecycle support for medium-caliber cannons, develops miniature precision strike weapons for airborne platforms, creates survivability solutions for soldiers, and engineers the next generation of tactical ammunition for a variety of combat platforms.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, implement, verify, and test algorithms and software/simulation tools for guidance, navigation, and control of aircraft, spacecraft, submersibles, surface ships, missiles, launch vehicles, and upper stages during powered and coast phases of launch, flight, earth orbit, interplanetary cruise, and orbital insertion, as well as during staging events.
- Perform navigation functions, including statistical processing of measured data points and their substitution into algorithms simulating physical reality.
- Formulate guidance equations to achieve desired position, orientation, or orbit in space.
- Develop control laws and hardware/software requirements for aircraft, launch vehicles, and/or spacecraft.
Skills
- Using first principles to develop math models of physical systems
- Classical methods for analysis and synthesis of control algorithms
- Modern (state space) methods for analysis and synthesis of control algorithms
- Optimal control techniques
- Working experience with guidance algorithms
- Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink software tools and related toolboxes
- Implementation of control/navigation algorithms in real hardware application systems
- Test performance predictions and test data reconciliation
- Model reduction techniques
- Hardware, field test, and Defense/Aerospace domain experience (a plus)
Qualifications
GNC Engineer Level 3
- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, Systems Engineering, or a closely related field plus 5 years of relevant experience.
- Master of Science degree in engineering discipline or closely related field plus 3 years of relevant experience.
- Ph.D. in engineering discipline or closely related field plus 1 year of relevant experience.
- Experience in model development, requirements definition, GNC algorithm analysis and synthesis, and familiarity with both modern and classical control design techniques.
- U.S. Citizenship
- Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance
GNC Engineer Level 4
- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, Systems Engineering, or a closely related field plus 8 years of relevant experience.
- Master of Science degree in engineering discipline or closely related field plus 6 years of relevant experience.
- Ph.D. in engineering discipline or closely related field plus 4 years of relevant experience.
- Experience in model development, requirements definition, GNC algorithm analysis and synthesis, and familiarity with both modern and classical control design techniques.
- U.S. Citizenship
- Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance
Pay
Primary Level Salary Range: $108,800.00 – $163,200.00
Secondary Level Salary Range: $135,800.00 – $203,600.00
The above salary ranges represent general guidelines. Northrop Grumman considers factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s experience, education, skills, and current market conditions when determining base salary offers. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses reward individual contributions and allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
