About the role

The Guidance Counselor provides students with educational, personal or vocational counseling and identifies and coordinates all available resources to promote intellectual, emotional, physical, and psychological growth and maturation of students in accordance with district, state, and federal standards.

Responsibilities

  • Implement, coordinate and monitor school-wide counseling services and activities; establish an environment for an effective counseling program.
  • Plan and develop guidance programs based on developmental needs of students, needs assessments, and school and district priorities.
  • Establish short- and long-range plans based on student needs as well as school, district, and state priorities.
  • Provide personal/social growth counseling (individual and group) concerning academic success, understanding of self and others, communication skills, decision-making, relationship skills, conflict resolution, goal setting, and effective coping skills necessary to refuse participation in substance abuse and physical violence.
  • Recognize overt indicators of student distress or abuse and take appropriate intervention, referral or reporting action; provide crisis intervention services.
  • Establish and follow procedures for appropriate interventions in accordance with school, district, and state laws, rules and policies.
  • Administer tests, interpret scores, and communicate results in an effective manner; use relevant assessment data to make recommendations to students, parents, teachers and other professionals.
  • Implement programs for career awareness and comprehensive educational/career plans which target high school completion, post-secondary opportunities, scholarships and financial aid information.
  • Establish priorities and an implementation schedule for counseling and student service programs.
  • Review, evaluate and select a variety of materials to support a well-balanced counseling program; use feedback from students, parents and staff to evaluate program objectives.
  • Communicate goals and services of the counseling programs to school administration, staff, students and parents.
  • Review student records and indicators (i.e., portfolio assessment, professional team interaction and analysis reports, documented parent interaction, student discipline records) to evaluate student needs and plan program.
  • Write or participate in the formation of student IEP or 504 Plans or other learning plans based on individual student needs.
  • Maintain professional relationships with outside services and make appropriate referrals for psychological, social work, health, and community services.
  • Prepare all required reports and maintain all appropriate records.
  • Participate in meetings, training sessions and other activities for improvement of professional knowledge and skills; participate in school-wide events, committees and supervisory responsibilities to assure student safety.
  • Keep a record of operating procedures and may share position specific knowledge, including use of collegewide ERP and related system processes, by providing guidance on standard operations and established departmental procedures as needed.
  • Provide service to the college through participation in events, committees, and other college activities.
  • Comply with all published College Rules, procedures, guidelines, and laws/regulations governing public employees, including but not limited to those related to document retention and destruction, FERPA, and confidentiality.
  • Strictly honor the privacy, security, and confidentiality of records and other sensitive information according to appropriate state, federal, and college regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Provide service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible, and professional engagement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A master’s degree from an accredited educational institution.
  • A Florida certification in School Counseling.
  • A criminal background check will be conducted.

Preferred

  • Working knowledge and understanding of child development, guidance and counseling principles, programs and services, as well as tests and measurement theory.

  • Team Orientation & Interpersonal — highly motivated team-player with ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with all levels within and external to the organization.
  • Relationship Management – able to personally provide high level of interactive service to others, building relationships and addressing identified needs.
  • Results Orientation – proven ability to set and exceed established targets.
  • Systems & Software - proficient level of knowledge of Microsoft Office and/or relevant position software programs.
  • Detail Oriented - Proven accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Multi-task - Ability to expeditiously organize, coordinate, manage, prioritize, and perform multiple tasks simultaneously to swiftly assess a situation, determine a logical course of action, and apply the appropriate response.

Pay

$51,089.00 Annual
