About the role
The Counselor is a full-time, on-site role based in the Rochester, New York Metropolitan Area. This role provides person-centered counseling and emotional support to people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, helping them develop coping skills, self-advocacy, and social confidence.
Responsibilities
- Conduct individual and group counseling sessions
- Complete psychosocial assessments and develop individualized support plans
- Document progress and maintain confidential records in compliance with regulatory and agency policies
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members, families, and community partners to coordinate services
- Monitor progress and respond to behavioral and crisis situations using trauma-informed and de-escalation techniques
- Advocate for each person’s preferences and goals
- Participate in team meetings, trainings, and quality improvement activities
- Travel between local program locations as needed
Qualifications
- Demonstrated skills in counseling, psychosocial assessment, and person-centered support planning
- Experience working with people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and understanding of related behavioral and emotional needs
- Strong communication, active listening, and interpersonal skills to collaborate with individuals, families, and interdisciplinary teams
- Ability to use crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and de-escalation techniques in a calm and professional manner
- Organizational and documentation skills, including maintaining confidential records and meeting regulatory requirements
- Proficiency with basic computer applications and electronic health or service record systems
- Bachelor’s degree in counseling, psychology, social work, human services, or a related field; relevant licensure or certification is a plus
- Knowledge of person-centered, trauma-informed, and strengths-based approaches; familiarity with NYS and OPWDD regulations is beneficial
- Ability to work on-site and participate in scheduled trainings and meetings
