Counselor

About the role

The Counselor is a full-time, on-site role based in the Rochester, New York Metropolitan Area. This role provides person-centered counseling and emotional support to people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, helping them develop coping skills, self-advocacy, and social confidence.

Responsibilities

• Conduct individual and group counseling sessions
• Complete psychosocial assessments and develop individualized support plans
• Document progress and maintain confidential records in compliance with regulatory and agency policies
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members, families, and community partners to coordinate services
• Monitor progress and respond to behavioral and crisis situations using trauma-informed and de-escalation techniques
• Advocate for each person’s preferences and goals
• Participate in team meetings, trainings, and quality improvement activities
• Travel between local program locations as needed

Qualifications

• Demonstrated skills in counseling, psychosocial assessment, and person-centered support planning
• Experience working with people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and understanding of related behavioral and emotional needs
• Strong communication, active listening, and interpersonal skills to collaborate with individuals, families, and interdisciplinary teams
• Ability to use crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and de-escalation techniques in a calm and professional manner
• Organizational and documentation skills, including maintaining confidential records and meeting regulatory requirements
• Proficiency with basic computer applications and electronic health or service record systems
• Bachelor’s degree in counseling, psychology, social work, human services, or a related field; relevant licensure or certification is a plus
• Knowledge of person-centered, trauma-informed, and strengths-based approaches; familiarity with NYS and OPWDD regulations is beneficial
• Ability to work on-site and participate in scheduled trainings and meetings
