About the Role

Ground Supply Equipment (GSE) Technicians at Southwest keep things moving behind the scenes by fixing and maintaining the powerful machines used on the ground—like trucks, carts, and de-icing gear. This hands-on role involves building, repairing, painting, and ensuring all equipment operates safely to support smooth flight operations and airport functionality.

This role is part of a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which means pay, schedules, and other job details are set through an agreement with the labor union. Work schedules are based on seniority and may include early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays. Mandatory overtime may be required to support flight operations, but shift trades are permitted to help balance your schedule.

U.S. citizenship or current authorization to work in the U.S. is required, and no work authorization sponsorship is available.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair various types of automotive, ramp, provisioning, and de-icing equipment used in the airline industry
  • Perform preventative and unscheduled maintenance on all airline ground equipment
  • Attend initial and ongoing training (classroom and/or on-the-job) to maintain proficiency in knowledge, information, and equipment
  • Create and track work orders in a maintenance tracking program in a timely manner
  • Wear Company visual identification card, prominently displayed above the waist for ready recognition
  • Meet physical ability requirements listed in the job description
  • Perform other job duties as directed by leadership

Requirements

  • Proficiency in the maintenance and repair of electrical and hydraulic systems
  • Ability to perform minor or major body repair
  • Ability to read documents, follow instructions, and understand procedures, rules, and regulations, including federal and local security regulations
  • Ability to read and research technical manuals and electrical & hydraulic schematics
  • Ability to work under tight time constraints
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work well under stressful situations and as part of a team
  • Proficiency in arc, gas, and MIG welding, as well as cutting torch
  • Proficiency in metal fabrication and equipment spray painting

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED (required); Associate's Degree or automotive/equipment repair technical degree (preferred)
  • Experience: 3 years of heavy truck and/or equipment repair experience with a technical degree (required); 5 years of heavy truck and/or equipment repair experience in lieu of a technical degree (required)
  • Experience using a computer inventory tracking system (preferred)
  • Licensing/Certification: ASE and A/C Certification (preferred); valid state motor vehicle operator's license (required); ability to obtain and maintain a SIDA badge and meet all local airport requirements (required)

Physical Abilities

  • Ability to work in the vicinity of ramps, hangars, and terminals
  • Ability to lift and move items up to 50 pounds on a regular basis
  • Ability to climb, bend, kneel, crawl, and stoop frequently and for extended periods
  • Ability to perform job functions within confined spaces or potentially hazardous areas
  • May be required to work through inclement weather

Other Qualifications

  • Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must comply with Company attendance standards
  • Must possess a complete set of mechanic’s tools
  • May be required to travel by airplane to other cities for field service work, including overnight stays
  • Must be able to work varied shifts and/or overtime, including holidays and weekends
  • Must satisfactorily complete a training program and six-month probationary evaluation period

Pay

Competitive market salary from $35.77 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. Additional bonus opportunities may be available for eligible roles at the discretion of the company.
