About the role
The Group Swim Lesson Instructor supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit dedicated to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
Responsibilities
- Provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swimming classes.
- Ensures an atmosphere of professionalism, discipline, friendliness, and safety within the framework of the Harrison Family YMCA Aquatics programs.
- Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
- Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA.
- Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
- Maintains records as required (i.e., attendance, progress reports, etc.).
- Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
- Reports to shift dressed and ready to assume responsibilities 10 minutes early.
- Fulfills all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.
- Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Organizes and puts away needed class equipment.
- Reports damaged equipment.
- Arranges for coverage of classes in the event of an absence.
- Keeps track of time during lessons and makes sure lessons begin and end on time.
- Enforces rules in a respectful way.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Promotes enjoyment of swimming.
Requirements
- Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification and Emergency Oxygen.
- Must be at least 15 years of age.

- Must demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
