About the role

The Group Product Marketing Manager (PMM) will help shape how our products evolve and are represented in the market. Responsibilities include collaborating on market research and competitive analysis, informing product messaging, feature development and prioritization, positioning, messaging, naming, education, go-to-market strategy development and execution, and growth.

You will work with stakeholders across Marketing, Product, Content, Production, Partnerships, and Advancement to execute activities that acquire and retain customers. You will generate high-impact ideas, lead complex cross-functional workstreams, prioritize work, manage multiple projects, and drive them to completion.

Products you may work on include our main site (personalized experiences, behavior change interventions, content, and other resources), the Understood app, and our podcast network. You’ll support the growth of existing products and the development of new ones, such as behavior change interventions and AI-driven personalization.

This is a hybrid role requiring a minimum of three (3) days a week in our NYC office, with a focus on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. We are a Mac-based environment, and team members are provided a Mac laptop for their work.

Responsibilities

  • Develop product marketing strategies based on insights, aligned with content and product strategies, to achieve defined success metrics tied to broader organizational objectives.
  • Create and execute campaigns using marketing levers, channels, and tools that effectively reach and communicate to a defined target audience.
  • Own and maintain evergreen marketing strategies for select products in our portfolio.
  • Partner with analytics to set target metrics for each campaign or initiative that ladder up to organizational goals.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to develop product positioning and messaging that articulates a compelling value proposition and product narrative.
  • Influence product development by understanding user needs and journeys, supporting the creation of an intervention product portfolio with early involvement through research, message testing, segmentation, and persona development.
  • Partner with the Advancement team to refine donation messaging strategy across the product portfolio and drive donations from existing users through research, testing, and optimization.
  • Develop content for internal and external use, including product collateral, web pages, case studies, blog posts, emails, app store listings, FAQs, and more.
  • Act as an internal product evangelist, socializing product/content roadmaps and connecting the Product team with Marketing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 7+ years of experience in product marketing (or comparable marketing and/or product experience), preferably at a tech start-up or direct-to-consumer (DTC) digital-first brand.
  • Experience owning projects or workstreams end-to-end, including budget management.
  • Ability to distill research and data into actionable insights for decision-making, segmentation, messaging, and strategic planning.
  • Strategic thinking and execution: translate team priorities into purposeful, mission-oriented plans and solve operational and tactical problems.
  • Strong stakeholder and cross-functional partnership skills, including influencing and aligning with key stakeholders.
  • People leadership and development: serve as a subject-matter expert and mentor junior teammates.
  • Excellent communication skills, adapting to different audiences and leading working sessions or presentations.
  • Strong writing skills for both long-form material (e.g., case studies, white papers) and concise content (e.g., one-pagers, webpages).
  • Data and analytics proficiency: use data to develop insights and make decisions within owned projects.
  • Project management: plan and run complex multi-stakeholder projects, set milestones, manage risk, and coordinate contributors under tight deadlines.
  • AI fluency: apply AI tools to improve output and efficiency, evaluate AI’s value in work, and share best practices with the team.
  • Collaboration and ways of working: take ownership, deliver high-quality work, proactively improve processes, and share knowledge to help others succeed.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience marketing podcasts, including scaling listenership and developing launch strategies, as well as deep understanding of podcast analytics.
  • Prior experience working with social impact organizations, non-profits, or the education sector.
  • Experience leading product naming or messaging development exercises.
  • Familiarity with marketing automation, project management, technical product development processes, and campaign measurement.
