Position Summary

The Group Exercise Instructor under the supervision of the Fitness Director or other assigned associate is responsible for delivering excellent services to all members, guests, and program participants. The primary function of the Cycling Group Exercise Instructor includes highly engaging in high-quality, appropriately challenging, and fun group exercise classes while promoting a safe and welcoming environment.

Essential Functions

  • Reports to work in uniform a minimum of fifteen minutes prior to assigned shift to receive communications and instructions from supervisor or associate, and to prepare the appropriate space.
  • Provides excellent services to members, guests, and program participants in the Y center, on the phone, and through email exchange.
  • Builds meaningful relationships with members, guests, and program participants with positive and solution-driven interaction.
  • Promotes wellness concepts that embody a well-rounded healthy and safe lifestyle.
  • Obtains and maintains group exercise certification, and continuously educates on formats.
  • Maintains needed CECs, certification requirements, and ongoing trainings needed.
  • Adheres to the class style, format, and certification requirements while teaching.
  • Embraces sensitivity and patience in dealing with diverse membership and wellness levels; avoids an intimidating wellness environment.
  • Encourages members to meet their wellness goals.
  • Maintains administrative responsibilities including recording class size and ongoing communication for supervisor.
  • Maintains equipment regularly; reports any challenges or concerns.
  • Adheres/enforces to all policies, guidelines, rules, and best practices as outlined by the Y in Central Maryland with positive interaction.
  • Handles conflict, concerns, member frustrations, and unusual center situations.
  • Informs proper leaders of operating challenges and/or conflicts during operating hours (either with members and/or associates).
  • Focuses on quality experiences and engagement within programs, services, and activities.
  • Promotes a professional image and maintains a clean and safe environment at all times.
  • Able to work with diverse populations, all ages, genders, and sexual orientations.
  • Attends and actively participates in all meetings as assigned.
  • Incorporates the four character values of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility and adheres to the YCM Code of Conduct.
  • Communicates the Y mission and objectives to the community.
  • Assists in all other areas as assigned.

  • Pilates: Peak Pilates, Stott Pilates, Pilates Method Alliance
  • Barre: SoulBodyBarre, Balletone
  • Waterfitness: AEA Aqua Fitness Professional, AAAI/ISMA Aqua Instructor
