About the role

The Groundsworker performs general gardening work and maintains the grounds in an assigned area of a campus. May occasionally assist a qualified specialist in sprinkler repair, spraying, tree trimming, or nursery functions.

Responsibilities

  • Under guidance of the lead groundworker, performs a broad range of groundskeeping duties, including but not limited to, planting, cultivating, fertilizing, watering, and spraying ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, lawns and flowers.
  • Mows and edges lawns. Rakes leaves, hoes weeds, and cleans trash from assigned areas including parking lots.
  • Prepares and treats soils for planting.
  • Operate and maintain equipment and tools for grounds and pest control operations; operate all equipment properly, following proper procedures including safety precautions; service equipment accordingly.
  • Performs pruning, thinning and constructing supports for trees and shrubs.
  • May occasionally assist a qualified specialist with tree trimming, or nursery functions.
  • Planting and maintaining turf, shrubs, and trees.
  • General cleanup.
  • Assure that work stations are kept clean and neat, all tools and equipment are properly stored and the general area is kept free of trash and litter.

Requirements

  • Experience: One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor.
  • Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods. General knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers, and the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Abilities: Recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees and flowers grown in California; perform strenuous physical work as described in this classification; utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination; learn to skillfully operate small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; and follow simple oral and written instructions.

  • Demonstrated willingness and initiative in carrying out assigned projects and duties.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and complete assigned work accurately and efficiently.

Skills

  • Ability to lift, lower, push, and pull loads ranging in weight from 5-60 pounds; carry loads ranging from 20-50 pounds for a distance of up to 20 feet; capable of kneeling, reaching overhead, climbing stairs and ladders; walking, twisting, stooping, bending; depending on the project, may spend 20%-50% of day sitting, 20%-50% of day standing, and 20%-50% of day walking.

Benefits

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors. Anticipated hiring range: Step 5 $3,747 per month for qualified candidates. CSU provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Position Information

  • Work status: Full-time/Non-Exempt/Probationary
  • Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (6:00 am – 2:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.
  • Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.
