About the role
Under general supervision of the University Housing Maintenance Manager and in accordance with schedules or periodic instructions, the grounds-worker performs general gardening work and maintains the grounds in an assigned area of a campus. Grounds-worker may work independently or as part of a grounds team.
Responsibilities
- Care for landscaped areas and grounds maintenance tasks.
- Perform general gardening work including planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, turf, and flowers.
- Use and care for gardening materials, tools, and power equipment.
- Recognize common species of ornamental shrubs, trees, and flowers grown in California.
- Read and interpret pesticide or fertilizer labels and apply them safely and effectively.
- Perform sprinkler repair and irrigation tasks as needed.
Requirements
- Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods.
- General knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, turf, and flowers.
- Ability to recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees, and flowers grown in California.
- General knowledge of sprinkler repair and irrigation fundamentals.
- Ability to read and interpret a pesticide or fertilizer label as well as apply both in a safe and effective manner.
Qualifications
- One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor.
Skills
- Knowledge of gardening and grounds maintenance methods.
- Ability to recognize common plant species.
- Ability to read and interpret pesticide or fertilizer labels.
- Basic knowledge of sprinkler repair and irrigation.

Pay
Anticipated Hiring Range: $46,776 - $55,000 Per Year
Classification Range: $41,532 - $57,024 Per Year
