Grounds Maintenance Worker - Athletic Fields

About the Role

This seasonal position involves general maintenance of athletic fields and recreation facilities, primarily through outdoor manual labor. Four positions are available.

Responsibilities

• Perform manual labor tasks such as hand shoveling dirt and/or snow, snow blowing, snow making (if assigned to Hogadon Ski Area), watering, sweeping, weeding, mowing, ladder climbing, cleaning, litter pick-up, trash collection, and lifting/loading/unloading objects.
• Operate handheld and light mechanical equipment, including trim mowers, blowers, and other grounds maintenance tools.
• Conduct daily inspections and safety checks at assigned facilities.
• Maintain spectator areas and hardscapes by cleaning, emptying trash receptacles, managing debris, stocking restrooms, and performing basic building maintenance.
• Keep basic records related to grounds maintenance.
• Assist with special outdoor projects as needed.
• Provide prompt, professional, and courteous customer service to the public, citizens, and City employees.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Knowledge of customer service principles and basic health/sanitation standards.
• Ability to use basic manual tools.
• Flexibility to work varied shifts, including weekends, nights, and holidays.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, perform physical tasks (e.g., walking, digging, climbing ladders), and maintain a neat work site.
• Capability to safely operate equipment and work around pesticides and landscapes.
• Effective communication skills and ability to learn facility layouts to assist patrons.
• Basic math skills and ability to maintain a professional appearance.
• Adherence to all City safety rules and procedures; report accidents/incidents or unsafe conditions immediately.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Qualifications

• No previous training or experience required.
• First Aid/CPR certification preferred.
• Must be at least 16 years of age. If under 18, cannot operate motorized equipment on public roadways per minor labor restrictions.
• Possession of a valid Wyoming Driver’s License preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Positions typically require stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, twisting, bending, lifting, gripping/grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
• Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly.
• Frequent walking, climbing steep inclines/ladders, and physically demanding tasks such as raking and digging.
• Exposure to environmental conditions including dust, odors, chemicals, sun, heat, cold, moisture, and extreme weather.

Minor Labor Restrictions

16 Years of Age:

• Maximum 8 hours of work on school days and non-school days; 40 hours per school/non-school week.
• Work hours: 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM on school nights; extended to 12:00 AM on non-school nights.
• Cannot drive on public roadways, even with a valid driver’s license.
• Cannot drive any vehicle (including personal) for work purposes.
• May operate ATVs, golf carts, riding mowers, etc., on City grounds only (not on public roadways) if WARM driving criteria are met.
• May operate weed eaters, leaf blowers, and similar equipment, but no other power-driven tools.

17 Years of Age:

• Maximum 8 hours of work on school days and non-school days; 40 hours per school/non-school week.
• Work hours: 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM on school nights; extended to 12:00 AM on non-school nights.
• May operate weed eaters, leaf blowers, and similar equipment.
• May operate ATVs, golf carts, riding mowers, etc., on City grounds only (not on public roadways) if WARM driving criteria are met.
• Eligible to drive vehicles (cars or light-duty trucks) on public roadways with restrictions:
  • Driving limited to daylight hours.
  • No more than three passengers.
  • Driving cannot exceed 33% of the scheduled workday or 20% of the scheduled workweek.
  • Cannot operate vehicles over 6,000 pounds or tow vehicles/trailers.
  • Must meet strict driving eligibility criteria: valid Wyoming Driver’s License, no prior moving violations, and completion of a driver’s education course or WARM Defensive Driving course.
