About the role

The Grounds Maintenance Crew Technician III performs a variety of highly skilled grounds maintenance and operations tasks under the direction of the Parks Manager. This position is within the Department of Neighborhoods and serves all city departments and properties.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates status of grounds and systems and performs or requests needed repairs.
  • Troubleshoots issues and identifies need for service.
  • Collaborates with Manager to hire service technicians and assists them with access and support.
  • Performs condition assessments and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Aids in planning and scheduling preventative maintenance.
  • Carries out construction projects.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches, and work orders to perform work.
  • Analyzes conditions and proposes solutions.
  • Selects materials and prepares project cost estimates.
  • Safeguards quality of work and compliance with regulations and standards.
  • Executes grounds maintenance, repairs, and construction tasks.
  • Prepares parks for public use, monitors safety, and addresses issues as needed.
  • Operates, repairs, and builds irrigation systems.
  • Maintains and repairs tools, power tools, and other equipment.
  • Transports and operates grounds maintenance and other equipment.
  • Performs tree care duties under the direction of a certified arborist.
  • Cuts, trims, and edges turf areas.
  • Performs turf maintenance such as fertilizing, insecticide and herbicide spraying, and aerating.
  • Prunes and deadheads shrubs, flowers, and perennials.
  • Plants flowers, trees, shrubs, and lays sod.
  • Controls weeds through manual methods, sprays, or other means.
  • Maintains watering schedules and adjusts based on plant health and water conservation goals.
  • Rakes, blows, and disposes of leaves.
  • Cleans up litter and other debris and empties garbage cans.
  • Removes snow from sidewalks, trails, drives, and parking lots.
  • Cleans restrooms, pavilions, picnic tables, bleachers, benches, and other facilities and amenities.
  • Inspects and performs playground repairs in accordance with standards.
  • Cleans sports courts, fences, and other equipment.
  • Removes graffiti from surfaces.
  • Builds minor capital projects, such as paving, fencing, curbs, landscaped areas, and irrigation.
  • Responds to city emergencies and on-call duties.
  • Keeps records of work, requests, and incidents.
  • Tracks work orders, labor, and resources used in a computerized system.
  • Keeps records of building incidents and emergencies.
  • Orders and inventories maintenance supplies and parts.
  • Works with others to complete tasks.
  • Organizes complex or large projects and involves other personnel to complete.
  • Supports special event planning, operations, setup, and breakdown.
  • Supervises work assignments for community service workers.
  • Works with volunteers and arranges tasks for volunteer projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Five (5) years of experience in grounds systems maintenance, construction, or repair, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Possession of at least 3 certifications evidencing advanced training and skills in the green industry, including irrigation, water conservation, pesticide/herbicide application, playground inspection, and arborculture. Examples include: CPSI, Irrigation Association, PGMS, QWEL, UCNP, UDAF, ISA.
  • Valid state driver's license or obtain one prior to employment. A CDL Class A or B is preferred.
  • OSHA 10 hour certification within 6 months of hiring.

Necessary knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of tools, equipment, materials, and supplies used in outdoor grounds maintenance, repairs, and construction.
  • Knowledge of park and grounds management, maintenance, and operations best practices.
  • Skills in turf, tree, and landscape maintenance.
  • Skills in operating grounds maintenance equipment including mowers, trimmers, edgers, blowers, chainsaws, snowblowers, UTVs, trucks, trailers, plows, and other vehicles.
  • Skills in using computers and software, including internet, email, spreadsheets, and word-processing.
  • Skills in operating and maintaining irrigation systems.
  • Skills in learning and applying technical information and standards.
  • Skills in time management and accountability.
  • Skills in customer service, managing conflict, and working with others.
  • Skills in communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Skills in providing a high standard of customer service.
  • Skills in working independently and using good judgment.
  • Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely.
  • Ability to complete forms, reports, and orders on a computer.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle with a trailer or other attached equipment.
  • Ability to maintain a regular schedule and complete daily tasks according to work schedule.
  • Ability to work occasional weekends, evenings, and a rotating on-call schedule.

Physical Demands of the Environment

  • Frequent use of hands and arms to operate objects, tools, or controls.
  • Frequent walking, standing, sitting, talking, and hearing.
  • Frequent lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifting weights up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, weather conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and noise levels.
  • Frequent interaction with people.
  • Frequent wearing of a uniform and personal protective equipment including safety vest, long pants, boots, and as needed ear and eye protection.

Salary

Grade 17: $22.09 - $33.41 (Typically starts at minimum).
