Groundman - Underground-(Dominion)
About the Role
The Underground Groundman is an entry-level position in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical underground distribution systems. This role works at various locations and may require travel to other states based on customer demands.
Responsibilities
- Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance, or repair work on energized and de-energized underground systems.
- Set pad mount transformers.
- Work around energized high-voltage systems with skill and care to ensure safety.
- Maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order.
- Perform rigorous physical labor.
- Understand and use company radio, basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying.
- Use and maintain hand tools properly.
- Identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit and understand induced voltage.
- Assist with the installation and hook-up of single-phase transformers.
- Perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
- Understand equipment set-up, grounding, minimum approach distance, and excavation/shoring requirements.
- Work at heights and in confined spaces, including underground trenches and manholes.
- Check voltage on transformers and install/remove services.
- Inspect rubber goods and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Wear PPE as required and climb various structures (wood, steel, etc.).
- Identify different types of materials used in line work.
- Work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
- Glove/work live high-voltage distribution lines when required.
- Perform all other related duties as required.
Requirements
- No prior experience necessary.
- Able to read, write, and communicate effectively.
- Able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days of employment.
- Able to travel long distances on short notice and work extended periods in various locations.
- Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
- Willing to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and outside of normal work schedules as required.

- Regularly required to talk or hear.
- Frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
- Must be able to climb different types of structures and work in underground trenches and manholes.
- Capable of performing rigorous physical labor and lifting in excess of 50 lbs.
Work Environment
- Frequently exposed to fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration.
- Occasionally exposed to extreme conditions at construction job sites.
- Works in loud noise environments and outside weather conditions.
