Groover Machine Operator
About the role
The Groover Machine Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining manual, semi-automatic, and CNC grooving and serration equipment used to manufacture precision metallic sealing products. This position ensures product quality, dimensional accuracy, and adherence to engineering specifications while supporting safe and efficient manufacturing operations.
Responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, job travelers, and work instructions to manufacture grooved and serrated metal gasket components.
- Set up and adjust grooving tools, carbide inserts, chuck jaws, and fixtures according to production requirements.
- Program or select machine parameters including spindle speed, feed rate, cut depth, and coolant flow based on material specifications.
- Load, center, and secure metal rings and components into grooving equipment while maintaining dimensional accuracy.
- Operate manual, semi-automatic, and CNC grooving equipment to produce components that meet engineering specifications.
- Monitor machine performance, tooling wear, and chip formation during production runs.
- Perform first-article inspections and obtain Quality approval prior to full production runs.
- Conduct in-process inspections for burrs, chatter, uneven pitch, dimensional deviations, and other defects.
- Measure and verify groove depth, pitch, root radius, tooth angle, surface finish, and inside/outside diameters using precision measuring instruments.
- Complete production records, inspection reports, and other required documentation.
- Maintain equipment by performing routine preventative maintenance, monitoring coolant levels, lubrication systems, and hydraulic functions.
- Follow all safety procedures, including PPE requirements, machine guarding practices, and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with 5S principles.
- Assist in troubleshooting machining issues and recommending process improvements to improve quality and productivity.
Qualifications
- Minimum two (2) years of experience operating manual, semi-automatic, or CNC machining equipment in a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, job routings, and basic GD&T symbols.
- Proficiency using precision measuring equipment including calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, and dial indicators.
- Basic math skills including fractions, decimals, and conversion calculations.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
- Experience in gasket, sealing products, flange, valve, or related manufacturing environments preferred.
Physical Requirements
Ability to walk, stand, or sit for extended periods of time. Ability to lift material up to 35 pounds as needed. Frequent use of hands for operating machinery, handling tooling, and performing inspections. Ability to work safely around moving mechanical equipment, metal chips, cutting fluids, and production machinery.
