About the Role
Assists the Grocery Manager and the Grocery Third Person in the operation of the Grocery Department. Directs and controls the operation of the entire store in the absence of the Store Director, Grocery Manager, and Third Person.
Responsibilities
- Champions Company and Division customer service programs to meet or exceed customer service goals.
- Handles customer relations in a positive manner, including effective resolution of customer complaints.
- Performs ordering, receiving, storing, pricing, stocking, rotating, and merchandising duties.
- Assists in planning, organizing, and directing day-to-day operations of the Grocery Department.
- Implements Company and Division merchandising policies and/or Store Director instructions.
- Controls shrink and prevents the sale of out-of-code product.
- Ensures compliance with Company sanitation, safety, security, and other policies; initiates corrective action as needed.
- Opens and closes the store; may act as backup cashier.
- Engages in suggestive selling and other sales techniques.
- Performs all job duties with accuracy, honesty, and integrity.
- Other necessary and required duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
- Thorough understanding of overall Company practices, policies, and procedures.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Proven ability to manage and develop people.
- Ability to work alone with minimal supervision and as a team player.
- Friendly, courteous, takes initiative, and maintains composure under pressure (e.g., interruptions, customer complaints).
- Effectively interacts with personnel, customers, vendors, and the public.
- Ability to judge and react to business activity.
- Knowledge of basic mathematics, weights, and measures.
- Knowledge of product variety, location, and perishability.
- Ability to stand and walk for long periods.
- Ability to reach, lift, stack, and maneuver objects up to approximately 80 lbs.
- Ability to climb ladders and operate fully loaded hand trucks and pallet jacks.
- Manual dexterity and good eye-hand coordination.
- Mental alertness to ensure safe and accurate completion of work activities.
- Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and at different times of the day with little or no supervision.
- Complies with all Company policies, including attendance, grooming standards, and dress code.
Physical Requirements
- Exposure to potential hazards with equipment and work aids in the Grocery Department.
- Exposure to approximately 35°F while handling products in cold cases, 28°F in the cooler, and -20°F in the freezer.
- Temperature-controlled store environment with exposure to varying temperatures in loading and receiving areas.
- Occasional exposure to outdoor environment when checking store perimeters or conducting off-premises business.
- Safety-sensitive position: responsibilities include tasks that could affect the safety or health of the employee or others.
