Graduate Assistant for South Hall (Part-time)

About the Role

This 10-month, part-time, live-in Graduate Assistantship (15 hours per week during the academic year, with a full-time training period in August) reports directly to a full-time Resident Director. The Graduate Assistant (GA) provides administrative leadership, community support, and engagement opportunities for students within a male residential area. This position complements a graduate student’s academic experience by applying theory and research practices to daily student interactions, including advising, counseling, conflict mediation, programming, and assessment processes.

Graduate Assistants work collaboratively as vital members of the Residence Life team, serving on departmental committees and participating in ongoing professional development.

Responsibilities

• Student Care Responsibilities:
  • Respond to the individual needs of students within the residence hall/area, providing high levels of care, mentoring, and intervention
  • Collaborate with all appropriate student care and service offices to promote student thriving
• Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Manage hall budgets; maintain housing records; assist in students’ academic intervention, roommate mediation, conduct follow-up, and student engagement documentation into appropriate university systems
  • Implement social media strategies to communicate highlights, events, and important dates and information
  • Collaborate with and support student programming efforts at the unit and hall levels
  • Assist in student staff recruitment, selection, and training
• Professional Expectations:
  • Operate a professional office and attend regular business meetings
  • Meet regularly with supervisor and other members of the Residence Life team
  • Actively participate in Residence Life training and professional development
  • Actively serve on a Residence Life committee and submit regular reports as requested by supervisor
• Facility Management:
  • Regularly evaluate facility safety, condition, and cleanliness
  • Submit work orders for building repairs and upgrades; oversee Health & Safety checks throughout the hall
• Community and Faith-Based Expectations:
  • Model spiritual maturity, demonstrating a personal and vibrant Christian faith grounded in a belief in and commitment to Jesus Christ
  • Model high standards of personal conduct that reflect integrity, responsibility, and good judgment at all times
  • Foster a positive residential community by being involved and visible in the residence hall/area and investing in the lives of resident students
  • Support university, division, and department mission, vision, and values

Requirements

• All employees must possess a strong Christian commitment and adhere to the standards outlined in the IWU Community Lifestyle Statement.
• Earned Bachelor’s Degree; enrolled in a graduate-level program and registered as a full-time student in a graduate-level program at IWU.
• Must be in good academic standing with a GPA of 3.0 or higher to accept a new graduate assistantship.
• Graduate students may hold more than one concurrent assistantship, provided:
  • Multiple assistantships must be of the same type (exempt or non-exempt).
  • Total number of hours of service provided by the student between both assistantships may not exceed twenty hours per week.
  • Student may not combine graduate assistantships and any other student worker positions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Leadership experience in Residence Life or a related area.
