Grade Foreperson
Position Overview
The Grade Foreperson is a frontline supervisory role responsible for overseeing the day-to-day completion of grading, excavation, utility, and site development projects. This position directs laborers and equipment operators, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and according to project specifications. Works closely with Project Managers and Superintendents to coordinate crews, equipment, materials, and schedules while maintaining a commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence.
Work Requirements
- Lead crews in promoting and maintaining a strong safety culture.
- Plan, coordinate, supervise, and monitor daily construction activities.
- Direct and train equipment operators, laborers, and other assigned personnel.
- Read, interpret, and execute project plans, blueprints, grades, and specifications.
- Ensure grading, excavation, compaction, and site preparation activities meet project requirements.
- Clock in and out, verify proper field layout, elevations, slopes, and grade tolerances.
- Maintain accurate daily reports, time records, equipment usage logs, and material tracking.
- Operate heavy equipment and perform labor duties as needed.
- Identify and communicate jobsite changes, delays, or potential cost impacts.
- Ensure equipment is operated safely and maintained properly; report mechanical or safety issues promptly.
- Promote teamwork, employee development, and accountability among crew members.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional jobsite.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience
- A high school diploma or GED preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of construction, excavation, grading, or site development experience preferred.
- Previous supervisory or crew leadership experience preferred.
- Experience operating heavy construction equipment strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of construction methods, materials, and equipment used in grading and earthwork operations.
- Be able to read plans and specifications.
- Mathematical understanding in order to calculate grades, slopes, yields, etc.
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and grade stakes.
- Understanding of grading, excavation, compaction, drainage, and utility installation.
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to calculate grades, slopes, elevations, yields, and quantities.
- Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety practices.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to effectively manage crews, schedules, and resources.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- A valid driver’s license is preferred.
