About the role
Within our Retail locations, Graduate Pharmacy Interns play a critical role in supporting our pharmacy teams to consistently deliver on our brand promise while developing their own skills in preparation for increasing responsibility. As a Graduate Pharmacy Intern, you will apply your didactic learning from pharmacy school into real-world practice to become ready for a Pharmacist role.
Under the direction of your preceptor and District Leader, you will complete a comprehensive training roadmap within 120 days of graduation designed to further your knowledge of store, district, and regional operations. Through hands-on experience, training, and time spent with leaders in your district, you will deepen your understanding of patient safety, error prevention, quality assurance drug utilization review (DUR), and pharmacy professional standards such as corresponding responsibility and red flag detection.
Responsibilities
- Assist the pharmacy team to ensure operations run smoothly, prescriptions are filled promptly, safely, and accurately, and patients receive caring service that exceeds expectations.
- Operate as part of the pharmacy team through consistent application of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), best practices, and effective communication.
- Demonstrate empathy and genuine care in all customer and colleague interactions, contributing to a safe and inclusive culture where all people feel valued and empowered.
- Follow pharmacy workflow procedures at each workstation (production, pick-up, drive-thru, and drop-off) for safe and accurate prescription fulfillment.
- Contribute to positive patient experiences by showing empathy and creating personalized moments while serving patients at pick-up, drive-thru, and over the phone.
- Offer immunizations and other services at the register and over the phone to keep patients healthy.
- Demonstrate compassionate care by solving or escalating patient problems.
- Offer to counsel, field medical questions, and solicit patient medical history to provide optimal care under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
- Take telephonic prescriptions from prescribers and call prescribers to clarify prescriptions or facilitate medication changes, where allowed by state regulation.
- Provide in-the-moment coaching, training, and mentoring to pharmacy team members while sharing best practices.
- Complete basic inventory activities, such as accurately putting away medication deliveries, completing cycle counts, returns-to-stocks, and waiting bin inventories.
- Contribute to a high-performing team, embrace a growth mindset, and remain receptive to feedback while actively seeking opportunities to expand clinical and technical knowledge.
- Remain flexible for scheduling and business needs, including voluntarily traveling to stores in the market to work shifts as needed.
- Understand and comply with all relevant federal, state, and local laws, regulations, professional standards, and ethical principles, including CVS policies and procedures to ensure patient safety and compliance.
- Deliver additional patient health care services (e.g., immunizations, point-of-care testing, and offsite clinics) where allowable by law and supported by required training and certification.
- Where permissible, support immunizations by:
- Completing additional licensure and training requirements to obtain Technician Immunizer status.
- Educating patients about vaccines and answering questions to obtain informed consent.
- Monitoring for and responding to adverse reactions, reporting events per public health requirements.
- Reviewing and collecting patient information, tracking and documenting for each applicable patient.
Requirements
- PharmD graduate of a U.S. accredited program prior to beginning the Post-Graduate Training Program at CVS Health.
- Ability to obtain required pharmacist licensure within the required timeframe, per state guidelines. Failure to obtain licensure within 120 days of graduation will result in separation of employment.
- Must possess, or be in the process of obtaining, valid intern and/or technician licensure as required.

- Communication Skills: Use and understand verbal and written communication to interact with patients and colleagues, utilizing active listening skills.
- Mathematical Reasoning: Ability to use math to solve problems, such as determining the total number of tablets to dispense or calculating day’s supply.
- Problem Resolution: Identify challenging interactions and choose the best course of action when faced with multiple options.
- Physical Demands:
- Be mobile and remain upright for extended periods.
- Lift, scan, and bag items; reach overhead; stretch or reach out with arms and/or legs.
- Move fingers repetitively for tasks such as picking, pinching, typing, or working primarily with fingers.
- Extend hands and arms in multiple directions to place, move, or lift items.
- Control precision, quickly adjusting machines to exact positions.
- Stoop considerably, requiring full use of lower extremities and back muscles to move items between low and high positions.
- Close visual acuity to perform activities such as transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, reading, and inspecting small parts.
- Occasionally lift up to 20 lbs and/or exert up to 20 lbs of force; frequently lift up to 10 lbs and/or exert up to 10 lbs of force.
- Express or exchange ideas by means of spoken word to convey detailed or important instructions accurately.
- Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.
- Perform any additional tasks as directed by a Supervisor or Manager.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1+ years of related work experience in pharmacy, retail, medical, or customer service settings.
- Ability to become immunization certified, as this is an essential pharmacist function.
- Ability to work in home store and across the market in other locations to meet business needs.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
Pay
The typical pay range for this role is $19.75 - $42.00 per hour.
