About the Role

This position supports, administers, configures, and enhances GPS (Global Positioning System) and GIS (Geographic Information System) applications used by Peoples Gas System. Responsibilities include quality assurance and control of GPS and mapping data to ensure accuracy of as-built information, pipeline network continuity, equipment identifiers, attributes, and spatial data. The role also involves maintaining and updating land base information on the GIS and collaborating with end-users and IT staff to produce GPS data, maps, queries, and reports for efficient operations and decision-making.

Work is primarily performed in the field and at various operating locations across Florida, including active construction sites, company and contractor offices, and field facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide user support for GPS Barcoding equipment and GIS, including assisting users with software navigation, data collection, and producing maps, displays, reports, and queries.
  • Offer consultation, training, and documentation to end-users and subject matter experts on the GPS Barcoding system.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot GPS and Barcoding equipment, including inventory management and escalating issues for timely resolution.
  • Participate in process and system improvements, including evaluating, designing, and implementing business processes, workflows, and applications related to GPS and mapping activities.
  • Conduct testing of software enhancements, feasibility studies, and research, as well as troubleshooting and resolving problems.
  • Fulfill special requests for ad-hoc maps, displays, reports, and queries, including basic geospatial analysis.
  • Maintain and update the company’s GIS system to comply with company, state, and federal guidelines by entering pipeline information from as-built work orders and proposed sketches.
  • Assist GDT Technicians and Project Managers in marking and submitting road improvement plans for municipalities and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).
  • Communicate with engineering and architectural firms, as well as local and state agencies, to address infrastructure, environmental, and regulatory impacts on the gas distribution and transmission pipeline network.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent certificate.
  • Valid Florida State Driver License with a safe driving record.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of work experience related to the duties and responsibilities of this position. Appropriate college degrees (e.g., Geography, GIS, Drafting) may substitute for some experience.
  • Knowledge and experience working with GPS field collection software and hardware.

Qualifications

  • Experience with Peoples Gas System’s GPS field collection process and GIS, including editing specifications such as gas mains connectivity and resolving errors.
  • Knowledge of CAD for drafting and computerized database systems.
  • Practical knowledge of basic drafting principles and GIS systems.
  • Familiarity with Customer Information Systems (CIS) and related databases for system design and modeling.
  • Proficiency in at least one related software application, such as Utility Center, Intergraph G/Technology, ESRI ArcInfo, AutoCAD, or MicroStation.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including active construction sites and field facilities across Florida.
  • Moderate to heavy stress levels depending on interactions with internal/external customers and governmental agencies.
  • Requires driving a company-assigned vehicle during both day and nighttime hours.
  • Occasional overtime may be required.

Physical Demands

  • Work involves a mix of office and field conditions, including walking in rough terrain and lifting objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for extended periods.
  • Involves climbing in and around active construction sites.

A pre-employment drug screening, background check (including education, employment, criminal, and motor vehicle records), and physical may be conducted if required for the role.
