About the role

A Graduate Practical Nurse (GPN) is a recent nursing program graduate who is awaiting licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in New York State. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), the GPN provides basic nursing care and supports patient treatment plans in healthcare settings.

Responsibilities

• Provide basic patient care, including bathing, dressing, feeding, and mobility assistance
• Measure and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure)
• Assist with wound care and simple medical procedures
• Administer medications only as permitted under supervision and state guidelines
• Monitor patient conditions and report changes to supervising RN
• Maintain accurate patient records and documentation
• Support infection control and safety protocols
• Assist patients with daily living activities (ADLs)
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members

Requirements

• Completion of an accredited Practical Nursing program
• Eligible to take the NCLEX-PN exam
• Current CPR/BLS certification (often required)

Pay

The pay range for a GPN is $26–$28/hour. After licensure, the rate will increase to $28.50 - $35.50.

Career Progression

Passing the NCLEX-PN exam leads to licensure as an LPN, with opportunities to gain experience, specialize, or move into higher-paying roles. There is also an option to pursue an RN (Associate or BSN) degree.
