Responsibilities
- Maintain barley trials in a field and greenhouse setting.
- This position primarily works in early generation utilizing both traditional and speed breeding techniques.
- Monitor crop health and ensure minimum quality standards utilizing fertilizers, herbicides, and other chemical treatments when necessary.
- Conduct crossing trials, including emasculation, pollination, and maintenance of new barley populations.
- Harvest, process, and catalogue barley populations and lines in both greenhouse and field settings, ensuring accurate record-keeping and organization.
- Assist in the collection, processing, and storage of seeds, including seed cleaning, handling, and packaging.
- Maintain seed inventory and ensure proper labeling and organization.
- Conduct tissue sampling for genetic screening to support our breeding programs.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of experimental procedures, observations, and results.
- Prepare reports, summaries, and presentations to communicate findings and progress to research teams and stakeholders.
- Assist with other related tasks as assigned by the Pre-breeding and Early Generation manager.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in plant sciences, agronomy, botany, or a related field.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting, bending, and working in greenhouse and field environments.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
- Familiarity with basic laboratory procedures and equipment is a plus.
- Willingness to learn and follow protocols carefully.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
