About the role
The Texas General Land Office is seeking an Accountant VI within the Financial Management Department. This role performs advanced and/or supervisory (senior-level) accounting work, involving preparing and reviewing financial statements, coordinating budget development, and supporting transparency and informed decision-making.
Responsibilities
- Prepares and reviews financial statements, general ledger entries, and program expenditure reports to ensure accuracy and compliance with federal and state requirements.
- Captures, reconciles, and analyzes financial data, and coordinates third-party financial reviews, including modeling and response monitoring, to support transparency and informed decision-making.
- Coordinates with divisions to support budget development, expenditure forecasting, and reconciliation processes to ensure alignment between financial reporting and operational planning.
- Sets and oversees the implementation of accounting policies and procedures that meet statutory and professional standards.
- Monitors financial activities and budget execution to ensure compliance with laws, internal procedures, and spending limits, while maintaining accurate and well-documented records.
- Supports the development of team goals, standards, and priorities to align operations with agency objectives.
- Administers financial systems and provides expert interpretation on complex financial and regulatory compliance issues.
- Identifies areas for operational improvement and recommends changes to increase efficiency and reduce resource use.
- Collaborates with IT staff on the design and enhancement of financial systems and tools.
- Ensures that accounting system improvements support integrated purchasing, disbursement, and reporting functions, and may supervise or provide guidance to financial staff involved in these operations.
Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in accounting, finance, or related fields.
- Five (5) years of full-time advanced accounting, financial analysis, or related experience requiring compilation, reconciliation, and/or analysis of detailed financial information.
- Four (4) years experience in preparing related schedules, reports, working papers, and trial balances for a state agency or university.
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) requirements, policy and procedures, laws and regulations pertaining to fiscal operations.
- Proficiency with the Uniform Statewide Accounting System (USAS) or Centralized Accounting and Payroll/Personnel System (CAPPS) and knowledge of Texas financial reporting requirements.
- Proficiency with spreadsheet, database and word processing software (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Access, and Word).
- Ability to coordinate complex accounting operations, to interpret laws and regulations, and apply general accounting theory.
- Emphasis on analytical ability to identify problems and formulate appropriate resolutions.
- Strong organizational skills with aptitude for detail.
- Ability to plan, organize, and maintain procedures and coordinate accounting operations and documentation; to perform complex accounting transactions, and maintain related documentation; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to pay attention to details, organize and prioritize changing work loads, and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
Skills

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.
