Glass Machinist Apprentice

Purpose of Position
The glass machinist will plan, setup, program machine, lightweight and measure high value hardware components, primarily for optical applications. Operations include grinding, milling, light weighting, contouring, vent holing, and other precision machining to meet customer specifications.
Day to Day Responsibilities
- Interpret customer and Corning internal drawings/blueprints of glass (mirror or other) parts and determine the approach to be used to meet specifications on 5-axis CNC machines, 5-axis AWJ machines, Large Campbell grinders, Northwoods vent hole machines or similar equipment.
- Determine proper method and sequence to assemble and align workpiece support systems to specific tolerances.
- Determine what the optimum tooling, grits, speeds, feeds, lead angles are for machining, light weighting or contouring of parts to ensure features and dimensions specified are met.
- Manage machine/process operations through the CNC controller and process control computer.
- Monitor, measure, and generate process performance metrics through the use of handheld measurement tools and system-generated data.
- Participate in the writing, revision and monitoring of Standard Operating Procedures.
Education, Skills and Experience Preferred
- Graduate from SUNY Canton or other college in A.A.S. Mechanical Engineering Technology or Graduate from vocational/trade school/Apprentice CNC Machinist program or Machinist and CNC work experience that is equivalent to this level of training and education.
- Ability to work in a team environment with engineering, technical, production and project management personnel
Pay and Benefits
The starting pay for this position is $34.55 hourly rate. Compensation and benefits available for this position are dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
