Richmond County is seeking a detail-oriented GIS Technician to support the development, maintenance, and analysis of Geographic Information System (GIS) data.

About the role

The successful candidate will assist in creating accurate digital maps, maintaining geospatial databases, performing spatial analysis, and supporting departments with mapping and GIS-related projects. This position requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Responsibilities

  • Create, edit, and maintain GIS datasets using ESRI ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Enterprise.
  • Collect, verify, and update spatial and attribute data from field crews, GPS devices, CAD drawings, surveys, and other sources.
  • Produce high-quality maps, exhibits, and reports for internal departments and public presentations.
  • Perform quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) on GIS databases.
  • Support utility, planning, engineering, emergency management, and public works projects through mapping and spatial analysis.
  • Maintain metadata and documentation for GIS datasets.
  • Respond to requests for maps, spatial data, and GIS analysis.
  • Assist with implementing and maintaining GIS standards and best practices.
  • Troubleshoot GIS data issues and provide technical support to staff.
  • Stay current with GIS technology, software updates, and industry best practices.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Geomatics, Surveying, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or a related field or five years’ experience in the GIS field of work.
  • Proficiency with ESRI ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of geodatabases, coordinate systems, projections, and spatial data management.
  • Familiarity with SQL, Python, or ModelBuilder is a plus.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, plats, and utility maps.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting local government, utilities, transportation, or planning departments.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, FME, or other GIS-related software.
  • Knowledge of parcel, utility, or infrastructure mapping.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while using a computer.
  • Occasional field work requires walking over uneven terrain.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Valid North Carolina driver's license or ability to obtain one before employment.
