GIS Technician

Responsibilities

• Maintains database components of the City’s GIS, focusing on water, sewer, and stormwater utility infrastructure, as well as additional municipal assets like sidewalks, streets, buildings, and planning data.
• Supports GIS needs across all City Departments, providing GIS assistance as needed.
• Collects and verifies field data using mobile devices or GNSS equipment, ensuring data accuracy and integration into the City’s GIS.
• Assists in deploying field mapping applications and GPS/GNSS technology, offering training and technical support to field personnel.
• Designs, updates, and maintains departmental GIS datasets, using industry-standard tools for database design, presentation, and schema updates.
• Publishes and distributes GIS datasets as required by City staff.
• Develops automated processes to streamline workflows and enhance data accuracy.
• Compiles historical data from various sources, such as plat files, engineering contract files, design drawings, meter account files, and governmental sources, for utility mapping updates.
• Creates and maintains digital and interactive maps for City employees.
• Converts AutoCAD drawings, field-collected data, and data from external organizations into appropriate formats.
• Collaborates with the Information Technology Department to ensure data security, accessibility, and backup procedures.
• Facilitates data sharing, transfer, and integration within the guidelines set by the City’s Information Technology Department.
• Communicates GIS-related needs, initiatives, and issues to the GIS Administrator as necessary.
• Stays updated on GIS advancements and field data collection technologies through workshops, seminars, and training courses.
• Proficient in or capable of learning scripting languages such as Python, Arcade, SQL, and JSON for automation, data analysis, and GIS application development.
• Performs both field and office work, sometimes in varying weather conditions and rugged terrain.
• Assists in receiving, reviewing, preparing, and submitting various records and reports.
• Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals, including supervisors, coworkers, engineers, contractors, property owners, and the general public.
• Scans and updates digital plans, documents, and GIS files.
• May be required to fill in for other positions within the department.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

• A high school diploma or GED is required.
• Six months of technical experience in GIS, CAD, surveying, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• A valid South Carolina driver’s license or the ability to obtain one.

Qualifications

• GISP (Certified GIS Professional)
• FAA Part 107 (Drone Pilot License)
• PLS (Professional Land Surveyor)
• Esri Technical Certifications/Coursework
