About the Role

This position involves teaching and coaching young people in the fundamentals and techniques of a sport while supporting the overall athletic program at North High School. The successful candidate will lead by example, promote school programs, and work collaboratively with stakeholders to foster student-athlete success both on and off the court.

Responsibilities

  • Teach and coach young people in sport fundamentals and techniques.
  • Develop and maintain a competitive and strong sports program.
  • Motivate student-athletes to excel in both athletics and academics.
  • Communicate effectively with administration, staff, students, and booster clubs.
  • Support the strength and conditioning coordinator for proper athlete conditioning and weight training.
  • Provide supervision before, during, and after practices and games.
  • Promote participation in other school programs and activities.
  • Work concession stands with the Athletic Boosters and attend one meeting per academic year.
  • Support and implement Davenport's multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) for behavior and academics.
  • Maintain good attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the head coach or administration.

Qualifications

  • Must hold a valid Iowa Coaching Authorization or Iowa Teaching License with Coaching Endorsement.
  • Experience with competition or success at the state level is desired.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a proven record of building rapport with culturally diverse students.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to sit, stand, speak, hear, see, and walk to perform routine duties.
  • Must occasionally lift, move, or push items up to 50 lbs (e.g., assisting children or moving furniture).
  • Must supervise students in all types of weather, indoors and outdoors.
  • Ability to meet multiple demands and interact with the public and staff.
  • Must be able to implement Crisis Prevention Intervention strategies, including physical restraint and escorting.

Work Environment

  • Noise levels range from quiet to loud.
  • Work may occur indoors or outdoors, including non-air-conditioned spaces.
  • Substance-free and fast-paced environment with constant contact with students, staff, or the public.
  • Direct responsibility for the safety, well-being, and work output of students.
