About the role

The Gila River Indian Community is seeking a Prosecutor I to serve in its legal department. This position is responsible for prosecuting criminal cases in the Community’s court system, providing legal advice, and representing the Community’s interests in legal proceedings.

Responsibilities

• Prosecute criminal cases in the Gila River Indian Community Court, including misdemeanor and felony offenses.
• Review police reports, conduct legal research, and prepare legal documents, including complaints, motions, and briefs.
• Represent the Community in court hearings, trials, and other legal proceedings.
• Provide legal advice and guidance to law enforcement agencies and Community departments.
• Collaborate with victim advocates, law enforcement, and other stakeholders to ensure justice for victims and the Community.
• Maintain case files, track case progress, and ensure compliance with legal deadlines.
• Participate in community outreach and education programs related to the legal system.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
• Active membership in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona or eligibility for admission by motion.
• Minimum of one (1) year of prosecutorial or criminal litigation experience, preferably in a tribal, state, or federal court system.
• Knowledge of federal Indian law, tribal law, and Arizona criminal law.
• Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex legal issues clearly and persuasively.
• Ability to work independently, manage a high caseload, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Commitment to upholding the laws and values of the Gila River Indian Community.

Qualifications

• Experience working with tribal governments or in tribal court systems is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) and other federal laws affecting tribal communities.
• Bilingual proficiency in English and O’odham or Piipaash is a plus.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including law enforcement, tribal leaders, and community members.
