Gifted Specialist - High School

Primary Function

Plan and provide appropriate culturally-responsive learning experiences and educational opportunities for each student assigned to the classroom based on Georgia Standards and the CSD Framework for Equitable Student Outcomes, and provide a classroom environment that aligns with City Schools of Decatur's commitment to equity ensuring that all students are safe, seen, and successful.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform classroom teaching and other duties related to the school program as assigned.
• Keep current on educational research, trends, and practices through continued professional development.
• Set long-term and short-term goals for student growth and achievement based on the standards for assigned courses, monitor progress towards meeting goals.
• Communicate, collaborate, and cooperate with colleagues, supervisors, and students.
• Demonstrate command of school subject(s) being taught.
• Develop and annually update a course syllabus for parents and students.
• Develop culturally-responsive lesson plans that are aligned to the Georgia Standards and ensure instructional materials are aligned to the Georgia Standards.
• Provide small group and individualized instruction to adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of each student.
• Plan and implement developmentally appropriate interactive culturally-responsive learning experiences.
• Communicate regularly with parents/caretakers to report on student progress on the Georgia Standards.
• Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere.
• Maintain records for report cards and/or parent conferences.
• Provide lesson appropriate lesson plans for daily substitute teachers and long-term substitute teachers.
• Identify student needs, develop strategies for small groups and/or individual education plans, implement any needed Tier I and Tier II interventions, and make appropriate referrals through the school's student support model.
• Be available to students and parents/caretakers for education-related purposes outside the instructional day.
• Participate in professional learning to increase skills and proficiency related to job responsibilities and serve on committees when needed.
• Provide culturally-responsive assessments that measure student achievement of objectives.
• Utilize technology effectively to plan, teach, and assess.
• Evaluate, select, and modify culturally-responsive resources and activities to match learners' needs and meet the curriculum standards.
• Prepare adequately for responsibilities to be assumed when absent.
• Participate in daily duties and responsibilities within the school including extracurricular responsibilities.
• Support the district and local school vision, mission, and goals in words, actions, and behaviors.
• Comply with the Georgia Code of Ethics for Educators.

  Qualification Requirements

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with other people.
  • Operate a variety of modern office equipment including microcomputers and related software.
  • Be reflective on practice and invest in yourself for improvement.

  • Organize and set priorities.

  • Adapt instructional materials and strategies to accommodate the wide range of skills which exist in a classroom.
  • Apply current trends and practices in education.
  • Teach in a multi-cultural and mainstream setting.
  • Use technology to enhance instruction.
  • Be fair and consistent with all students.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to students.
  • Meet responsibilities in a punctual and reliable manner.
  • Comply with school board policies and follow administrative procedures.

  Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in applicable field of education from a Professional Standards Commission (PSC)-approved college or university required.
  • Valid in-field teaching certificate.
  • Previous teaching experience preferred.
