In English, we use the word ‘the’ in front of all nouns. In German, nouns are associated with one of three genders, which changes the article that precedes them:
- Masculine: der
- Feminine: die
- Neuter: das
When building vocabulary, always memorize the article with the noun. For example, learn ‘cat’ as die Katze. If the noun is plural, the article is always die, regardless of the singular gender.
Word Order Is Important
A standard German sentence follows the subject-verb-object structure, except in subordinate clauses, where the verb moves to the end. Subordinate clauses are introduced by words like weil (‘because’) or dass (‘that’). In questions, the verb precedes the subject.
Master the conjugation of sein (‘to be’) and haben (‘to have’), as these verbs are essential for forming past and future tenses. Many Germans simplify future tense by combining time indicators (e.g., ‘tomorrow’) with present-tense verbs.
Articles Change Depending on the Case
In German, the case reflects the noun’s role in a sentence, which may alter its article. Focus on the nominative, accusative, and dative cases first. The genitive case is best learned at an intermediate level.
‘Sie’ Is Different Than ‘sie’
- Capitalized Sie: Formal ‘you’ (used to show respect).
- Lowercase sie: Can mean ‘she,’ ‘they,’ or polite ‘you.’
Determine the meaning by examining the verb ending:
- Ends with -t: ‘she’
- Ends with -em: ‘they’ or ‘you’ (context clarifies).
