Geotechnical Engineer I
About the role
Under general supervision, the Geotechnical Engineer I collaborates with senior engineering staff and CAD technicians to produce design submittals for deep foundation and ground improvement systems to be constructed by Michels Construction. Design submittals include drawings and supporting calculations developed using geotechnical and structural engineering principles, analytical methods, and state-of-the-art computer modeling software. Types of design may include, but are not limited to:
- Rigid inclusions
- Aggregate piers
- Soil mixing
- Compaction grouting
- Chemical grouting
- Dynamic compaction
Occasional support for deep foundations or other geostructural systems may also be required. Michels’ project portfolio spans commercial buildings, highways and bridges, industrial facilities, civil infrastructure, marine structures, and military facilities.
As design engineer, you will participate in preliminary engineering during bid phases and perform QA/QC review during production. Strong attention to detail and effective oral and written communication skills are critical for success.
Responsibilities
- Develop design submittals for deep foundation and ground improvement systems
- Prepare drawings and supporting calculations using analytical methods and computer modeling
- Assist with deep foundation and geostructural system designs as needed
- Conduct preliminary engineering during bid phases
- Perform QA/QC review during production phases
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with an emphasis in structural or geotechnical engineering
- 0–3 years of related experience or equivalent combination
- Proficiency with MS Excel and Mathcad
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record

Pay
Expected salary range: $69,000 – $92,000 USD (actual pay adjusted based on skills, experience, education, and other job-related factors).
