About the role
CDM Smith is seeking a junior Geotechnical Engineer to join our infrastructure services team in Edison, NJ. In this role, you will develop engineering designs of basic to moderate complexity for excavation, dewatering, shallow/deep foundations, dams, reservoirs, levees, and geo-environmental projects under general supervision.
Responsibilities
- Create and review draft designs for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, ensuring adherence to firm policies and practices.
- Perform site reviews and studies to align designs with location specifications, updating requirements as necessary.
- Conduct soil sampling analyses and modeling.
- Contribute to the firm’s Technical Knowledge Management by developing white papers and technical design documentation for new or special-case designs.
- Submit technical papers and designs for publishing in technical journals.
- Create or collaborate on presentation materials (e.g., posters) for conferences.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical, Civil, Mining, or Geologic Engineering or a related discipline.
- 1 year of related experience.
- Intermediate knowledge of computer-assisted design and drafting (CADD) 3D/4D software and practices.
- Knowledge of engineering principles of design.
- Expert knowledge of Microsoft business software (Excel, Word, etc.).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Domestic and/or international travel may be required (60%–90% frequency, contingent on project demands).
- An appropriate and valid driver’s license is required.
Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering (highly preferred).
Pay
Pay range: $78,624 – $129,771 USD (annual). Compensation is determined by role, function, relevant experience, skills, certifications, education/training, and geographic location. Bonuses are discretionary and may apply.
