Role Summary

At Flywheel Energy, we’re driven by financial discipline and operational excellence. We are seeking a detail-oriented GIS Technician to support the day-to-day geospatial operations that keep our exploration, production, and pipeline teams informed and moving. This is an entry-level to early-career role focused on hands-on GIS work: digitizing infrastructure, managing spatial databases, integrating field data into corporate systems, and producing the maps and records that field crews, management, and regulators rely on. The GIS Tech is a foundational contributor to the GIS department and plays a direct role in maintaining the data quality and spatial accuracy that underpin Flywheel’s operational decision-making. The ideal candidate is technically precise, eager to learn, and committed to doing the work right the first time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mapping & Cartographic Production
    • Create, update, and maintain standard operational maps for field crews, management, and regulatory reporting using established templates and company standards.
    • Produce clear, accurate map products supporting exploration, pipeline routing, land operations, and daily operational logistics.
    • Apply consistent symbology, labeling, and layout standards across all map deliverables to ensure professional, readable outputs.
    • Respond to ad-hoc map requests from cross-functional teams within established turnaround timelines.
    • Maintain an organized, version-controlled library of map products for easy retrieval and reuse.
  • Digitizing & Data Entry
    • Digitize infrastructure features including wells, pipelines, roads, and facility footprints from source documents, imagery, and field sketches.
    • Input GPS coordinates, survey data, and associated attributes into the corporate geodatabase with accuracy and consistency.
    • Georeference scanned maps, plats, and legacy documents to align with current spatial reference frameworks.
    • Convert field data from GPS units, mobile collection apps, and survey instruments into GIS-ready formats for integration into corporate systems.
    • Maintain attribute completeness and accuracy across all digitized feature classes.
  • Database Management & Data Integrity
    • Manage and maintain spatial datasets within the corporate geodatabase, ensuring data is current, organized, and accessible.
    • Check spatial datasets for digitizing errors, missing attributes, topology violations, and overlapping features; resolve issues or escalate as appropriate.
    • Archive older project maps and spatial layers, maintaining a clean and easily navigable directory structure for the GIS team.
    • Apply and follow established naming conventions, folder structures, and metadata standards for all GIS files and datasets.
    • Support data migration and normalization tasks during acquisition onboarding under direction of the GIS Team Lead.
  • Metadata & Documentation
    • Fill out standardized metadata records detailing when spatial data was created, its source, coordinate system, and accuracy.
    • Document data lineage, processing steps, and QA/QC outcomes for all datasets produced or modified.
    • Maintain up-to-date project logs and work records to support team transparency and audit readiness.
    • Aid in developing and following standard operating procedures (SOPs) for routine GIS tasks.
  • Field Data Integration & Operations Support
    • Ensure GPS, survey, and field-collected data integrates cleanly into corporate GIS systems with proper projection, attributes, and quality review.
    • Collaborate with field, engineering, and land teams to understand spatial data needs and translate them into GIS deliverables.
    • Support environmental permitting, right-of-way mapping, and regulatory filing requirements through timely and accurate spatial data.
    • Assist with spatial analysis tasks such as proximity studies, buffer analysis, and acreage calculations as directed.
    • Participate in GIS team projects supporting pipeline routing, asset development, and operational planning.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Geomatics, Geoscience, or related field; or Associate’s degree with equivalent hands-on GIS experience.
    • 1–3 years of GIS experience; recent graduates with strong academic project work and internship experience encouraged to apply.
    • Proficiency with ArcGIS Desktop/Pro and ArcGIS Online (AGOL).
    • Experience with geodatabase editing, feature class management, and attribute table workflows.
    • Familiarity with GPS data collection, coordinate systems, and map projections.
    • Strong attention to detail and commitment to spatial data accuracy.
    • Able to manage multiple tasks, follow established workflows, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills; able to coordinate clearly with field and office teams.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience in oil and gas, pipeline, utilities, or related industries.
    • Familiarity with spatial databases such as PostgreSQL/PostGIS or SQL Server Spatial.
    • Basic Python or ModelBuilder scripting for task automation and workflow efficiency.
    • Experience with mobile data collection tools (e.g., ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123, or similar).
    • Knowledge of oil and gas datasets including well records, production data, land plats, or pipeline infrastructure.
    • Familiarity with metadata standards (FGDC, ISO 19115) and data quality documentation practices.
    • Experience digitizing from aerial imagery, LiDAR, or engineering drawings.
    • Exposure to cartographic design principles and map template development.
    • Multi-state land or field operations experience a plus.
