We are recruiting an outstanding mid-senior level clinician specializing in genitourinary cancers. The selected applicant will be appointed as Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in the clinical or tenure track, depending on experience and qualifications.

About the role

The position is part of Huntsman Cancer Institute's strategic priority to provide fully integrated, high-value cancer care across the Intermountain West. As part of a growing translational research initiative, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in multidisciplinary teams to develop clinical research programs.

The Division of Oncology encompasses the Department of Internal Medicine's and Huntsman Cancer Institute's missions through building an exceptional medical oncology program. It combines experienced and caring physicians with a commitment to teaching and passion for research.

Clinical activities in the Division of Oncology are supported by 34 physicians and 30 advanced practice clinicians who provide outpatient and inpatient care services at four locations in the Salt Lake Valley, including Huntsman Cancer Institute and University of Utah Health's community clinics in South Jordan, Sugar House, and Farmington. The Division also provides outreach services at affiliate hospitals in Rexburg, Idaho; Jackson, Wyoming; and Helena, Montana.

Clinical activities include specialty programs such as the Huntsman Acute Care Clinic, Supportive Oncology & Survivorship (SOS), Family Cancer Assessment Clinic (FCAC), and Geriatric Oncology Clinic, among others.

Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical care on our main campus, community, and affiliate hospital locations.
  • Lead clinical or translational research initiatives.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary teams to develop clinical research programs.
  • Engage in education and mentoring of fellows, residents, PhD postdoctoral fellows, and students.

Requirements

  • Medical Degree.
  • Board certified in Internal Medicine and eligible for ABIM board certification in Oncology.
  • Eligible for a Utah Medical License.

Competitive candidates will have a track record of accomplishment as an academic oncologist, as evidenced by:

  • Excellence in clinical oncology.
  • Original contributions to oncology research.
  • National and international visibility.
  • A history of extramural research funding.
  • Progressive leadership and administrative experience.

Research & Education

The Division of Oncology has one of the most robust clinical-trial programs in the Department of Internal Medicine and at Huntsman Cancer Institute. Research activities are supported by $20 million of extramural funding in FY24, through federal, association/foundation, and industry awards. In FY24, the Division accounted for:

  • 45% of all industry trials.
  • 48% of all investigator-initiated trials (IITs).
  • 46% of NCI and Cooperative Group Trials at Huntsman Cancer Institute.

Clinical research is supported by the Huntsman Cancer Institute Clinical Trials Office, Biospecimen and Molecular Pathology Shared Resource, numerous other shared resources across Huntsman Cancer Institute and the University of Utah, and disease-specific clinical databases. The Utah Population Database affords unique opportunities for population-based genetic research.

The Division is highly committed to education, including a combined Oncology/Hematology Fellowship program consisting of 18 fellows. The University of Utah offers excellent graduate programs for training PhD students, MD/PhD students, and residents/fellows in an accelerated Physician-Scientist Training Program (PSTP). The Division is committed to advancing junior faculty in conjunction with institutional research training programs, such as the Vice President's Clinical and Translational (VPCAT) Research Scholar Program and the Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) program.
