Main Functions
- Determine appropriateness of referral, eligibility of patient for genetic counseling.
- Affords case management and patient care follow-up including scheduling appointments, making referrals for services and financial coverage/authorize, tracking test results and conveying those results to patients and providers.
- In counseling sessions and/or over the phone obtains and evaluates family history, pregnancy history, medical history, and other appropriate information or signatures from the patient for use in the consultation and evaluation process.
- Obtain and review pertinent medical records and scientific literature for current information pertaining to case.
- Analyze and interpret information obtained from the patient, medical records and resource materials.
- Discusses and explains pertinent genetic, medical and psychosocial information with patients, including risks, procedures, inheritance patterns, test results, and implications of findings.
- Provides informed consent for prenatal procedures.
- Analyzes and interprets clinical/laboratory findings.
- Provides comprehensive information regarding the etiology, inheritance and natural history/prognosis for genetic conditions in culturally appropriate terms that patient can comprehend.
- Participates in quality assurance activities pertinent to Prenatal Diagnosis and Perinatal Clinic.
- Researches specific lab test and testing facilities to ensure the best testing methods with concerns to cost.
- Educates patients regarding tests and procedures and risks associated with each.
Minimum Requirements
- Master's Degree in Biology, Genetic Counseling, Healthcare Management or equivalent related discipline.
- At least One year of experience in genetics or outpatient clinic setting or related field.
- Genetic Testing Software Proficiency.
- Genetics and Genomics Expertise.
Preferred Requirements
- Certified Diplomat of American Board of Medical Genetics in genetic counseling.
