Genetic Counselor II
Position Summary
Provides genetic testing, education and support to patients and provides programmatic support to the department's clinical program(s). Functions as an advanced level healthcare provider working under the delegated authority of a supervising physician. The role and responsibilities extend beyond those of the Genetic Counselor and are focused on providing advanced clinical services. In collaboration with an attending physician, is responsible for the coordination and direct care of patients within specialty area(s) and clinical protocols as needed.
Job Responsibilities
- Performs standard clinical care and education responsibilities as listed in the genetic counselor 1 role and scope of practice.
- Performs advanced clinical services or other tasks delegated by the supervising physician(s), consistent with education, training and practice protocols, policies, and procedures.
- Help create/improve clinical practice protocols.
- Provides clinical mentorship and supervision to junior staff.
- Supervises and mentors' interns and students from the Weill Cornell genetic counseling graduate program.
- Develops educational and written materials for students undergoing internship rotations at WCM.
- Maintains CEU requirements.
- Participates in genetic counselor program development within the department.
- Incorporate medical and scientific literature into evidenced-based practice recognizing that there are limitations and gaps in knowledge and data.
- Provides recommendations on improvements to workflows and patient care services.
- Participates in interviewing and selecting candidates for the Weill Cornell MS in genetic counseling program, and when relevant, genetic counseling staff, administrative and internship positions.
- Assists with the orientation and training of new staff.
- Performs other related duties as directed.
Education
Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited genetic counseling program by the ACGC.
Experience
Minimum 3-5 years related experience in a genetic counseling position.
Licenses and Certifications
Certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling required, inclusive of Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling.
