Genetic Counselor

About the role

We are seeking a skilled Genetic Counselor to join our team. This position provides medical/clinical genetic counseling services to individuals and families with known or suspected inherited conditions. You will provide individualized information and supportive counseling, coordinate genetic testing, evaluate and determine the needs of the individual and families, and work with physicians to make appropriate referrals.

Responsibilities

• Conduct thorough medical history, including detailed family histories.
• Collect and review all lab data and medical records of patient to establish patient's current health status.
• Utilize clinical skills and knowledge in the assessment of health status.
• Gather and integrate patient data to assist in the development of an individualized plan of care, utilizing appropriate reference material.
• Coordinate handling of patient specimens with appropriate laboratory standards.
• Maintain knowledge of growth and development.
• Adapt behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Master’s degree from an accredited training program in Genetic Counseling.
• Eligible for Board Certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling and/or the American Board of Medical Genetics.

Qualifications

• Preferred: Post Graduate Clinical Experience.

Skills

• Computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally.
• Proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
