Genetic Counselor I/II – Inpatient
About the role
Coordinate, administer, and deliver inpatient genetic counseling to hospitalized patients and their families in a direct patient care role, with significant in-person time at the main campus of Seattle Children's Hospital. Assess recurrence risks and recommend medical or genetic testing based on an analysis of risks, benefits, and other factors. Review implications with patients and families and provide crisis intervention regarding unexpected genetic conditions. Educate physicians and other health professionals while ensuring appropriate consults and ongoing care. Assist in program development within our collaborative inpatient team and educate internal and external staff on inpatient genetic counseling, including the orientation and mentoring of genetic counseling students, residents, and new staff. Candidates should be familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures in pediatric genetics and rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate, administer, and deliver genetic counseling to patients and families at risk for hereditary disorders and/or inborn errors of metabolism
- Assess recurrence risks and recommend medical or genetic testing based on analysis of the risk, benefit, and cost
- Review implications with the patient and provide crisis intervention regarding unexpected genetic conditions
- Educate physicians and health professionals to ensure appropriate patient referral and care
- Provide orientation, training and supervision to volunteers, interns, students, and other learners as appropriate
- Actively participate in and lead department improvement activities including research and other initiatives related to improving patient care and the family experience
- Identify and participate in a specialty clinic (e.g., Arthrogryposis, EpiGenetics) with a need for genetic counseling services
Genetic Counselor I
Required Education and Experience
- Master of Science in Genetic Counseling
Required Credentials
- Board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling or American Board of Medical Genetics, OR must have Active Candidate Status for the ABGC Board Examination and must successfully obtain ABGC Certification within two (2) ABGC exam cycles or within three (3) years after the start of employment
- Washington State Licensure as a Genetic Counselor OR Provisional Washington State Licensure as a Genetic Counselor
Preferred
- Experience in pediatric genetics or equivalent work
Genetic Counselor II
Required Education and Experience
- Master of Science in Genetic Counseling
- At least one (1) year of experience performing genetic counseling

Pay
$80,715.00 - $133,180.00 per year. Offers are determined by multiple factors including equity, skills, experience, and expertise, and may vary within the range provided. This compensation range was calculated based on full-time employment (2080 hours worked per calendar year).
