Genetic Counselor Assistant
About the role
The Division of Pediatric Medical Genetics has an immediate opening for a Genetic Counselor Assistant (GCA) in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah Spencer F. Eccles School of Medicine. This position is part of the patient through-put team and supports the various providers in Medical Genetics, including geneticists, genetic counselors, and other clinicians with administrative functions, including triaging and prepping incoming cases for geneticist and genetic counselor review. The position will include patient-facing time, including consenting for genetic testing and obtaining samples (cheek swabs) for these tests.
Responsibilities
- Reviews referrals and triages patients for appropriateness of genetic services
- Obtains and abstracts medical records for clinical appointments
- Assists with patient chart reviews and case preparation for genetic counselors and other clinicians, as directed
- Obtains informed consent for genetic testing
- Assists in coordinating genetic testing for family members, including both diagnostic and research-related genetic testing
- Obtains patient samples, including cheek swabs, for genetic testing
- Coordinates and researches insurance coverage and authorization requirements for genetic testing
- Enters patient visit and genetic testing data into the patient tracking database
- Assists in preparing letters of medical necessity under the guidance of a genetic counselor
- Provides patients and families with updates regarding insurance authorizations, coverage decisions, and status of testing
- Assists with appointment scheduling and responds to phone inquiries related to genetic services
- Assists in preparing and distributing patient follow-up correspondence regarding genetic testing results
- Composes and prepares correspondence, newsletters, presentations, and other program materials as needed
- Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Program Assistant, I: Requires little to no related experience. Entry-Level position in the Support track.
Program Assistant, II: Requires at least 1 year of related experience. Intermediate Level position in the Support track.
Equivalency Statement: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Pay
- Program Assistant, I: $16.12 to $20.29
- Program Assistant, II: $17.33 to $21.81
Final placement, including the associated pay rate, will be determined based on business needs and budget considerations.
Schedule
Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Hours may vary based on operational needs. Opportunities for a hybrid telework schedule may be considered after the initial training period, provided the arrangement is supported by operational needs and individual performance. Telework arrangements are not guaranteed and may be modified or discontinued at any time based on business requirements or performance. Employees approved for hybrid telework must provide their own private workspace, secure internet connection, and demonstrate the ability to work independently.
