About the Role

The Hospital Assistant III – Genetic Counselor Assistant supports Ambulatory Services by performing patient intake, documentation, and coordination tasks under direct supervision. This role ensures smooth clinic operations and assists genetic counselors and physicians with patient care and research activities.

Responsibilities

  • Interview patients and document personal and family medical history.
  • Request outside medical records and upload them to Apex and the departmental database.
  • Assist with clinic flow, including scheduling, rooming patients, and coordinating joint visits with genetic counselors and physicians.
  • Review research consent forms with patients and send Docusign consent forms.
  • Escort patients to the laboratory for blood draws or facilitate saliva sample collection for genetic testing.
  • Prepare blood or saliva samples for transportation to laboratories within and outside UCSF.
  • Monitor communications with genetic testing laboratories, including responding to requests for additional documentation or samples.
  • Consult with healthcare providers and laboratories.
  • Draw and update patient pedigrees and patient history forms.
  • Enter data into the Cardiovascular Genetics database.
  • Perform other patient preparation and follow-up tasks.
  • Support clinical research projects, including consenting, data collection, documentation, and other tasks.
  • Comply with Medical Center House and Telephone Standards.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, and excellent customer service with patients and staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a biological/health science or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of genetics and genetic concepts.
  • Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both over the telephone and in person.
  • Ability to deal sensitively and effectively with patients.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work well both independently and in a team setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with patient and/or family contact in a community or medical setting.
  • Previous experience with clinical projects, either in an administrative or clinical role.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical practice terminology and genetic terminology.
  • Experience with Outlook, FileMaker Pro, and Progeny (or other pedigree drawing software).
  • Bilingual or multilingual capability (Spanish, Cantonese, Russian).
